The MOST Radical, Revolutionary Ever

Yesterday in our all team meeting, Cole shared some stuff with us that got me SUPER PUMPED UP about 2009. He opened up by reading John 1:1-18.

Then he shared that no matter how revolutionary we think we are, all of us have at least some propensity to want things to stay the same. It’s lurking deeper within some of us than others, but its there.

God is the most radical revolutionary there is. He’s not traditional at all. He’s always up to something new.

The birth of Jesus Christ was the most radical and revolutionary thing to ever happen. God shook up every religious system, thought, and mindset that there is and completely changed to way we relate to him through the birth of His son.

Cole also shared Revelation 21:5. God is up to something BIG and NEW at The Connection Church.

So, connectors, hold on to your butts. In 2009 we are going to shake stuff up and press forward. We’ve come a long way, but we’ll NEVER stop having a long way to go.

Get ready to be change agents. Get ready to see people all along the I-35 corridor meet Jesus like never before!

2009, HERE. WE. COME.

Christmas Light Life HACKS

Each year I get a lot of great comments on my Christmas lights. Thank you. I work hard on it.

Right after the “great lights Zak” usually comes some comment like “too much work blah blah blah I didn’t put lights up.” So, I thought I’d share my little Christmas lights hacks to help you out a little. They aren’t much, but they’ve made a BIG difference for me.

BEFORE you unwrap. When you get new lights, pull them out of the box and plug them in to test them BEFORE you unwrap and unroll them. A strand of lights is IMPOSSIBLE to put back into the box. This way, if the strand is bad, it will go back into the box easily for a fast return at the store.

Storage. Roll up each individual strand and put it in a plastic sack. Pack them flat on top of each other in a box or rubbermaid tub. Sure you can buy all kinds of storage tubs for $25 that hold 5 strands…or you can do this for free, get the same result, and store way more lights in a smaller space.

xmas lights2Hanging lights on tall trees. You don’t need a HUGE ladder. Just some PVC and screws. This is how I put my lights in the trees. Check out the pic. When it comes time to take the lights down, DO NOT yank on them. I tore up a tree pretty bad one year doing that. Use the same PVC stick to get the lights down.

Get ‘em while they’re cheap! There is no need to pay a lot for lights! Be sure to hit the sales after Christmas day and get lights for 88 cents a strand instead of $3-8 each. You will have to store them for the year, but you’re probably storing a bunch of Christmas junk already anyway. :)

Buy a timer. The BEST Christmas light display investment I ever made was buying two timers. I got them on sale after Christmas one year dirt cheap. December is such a busy time of the year that often you may not be home to turn the lights on or off manually. Hook them up to a timer and let it do the work for you. I usually set mine to be on from 5:30pm-midnight and then again from 6:00am to 7:30am.

Hope these little tips help you out next year!

Books Books BOOKS!

pile-of-bookOne of my goals (more on all of my 2009 goals soon) for 2009 is going to be to read 50 books. I think. Maybe 40. Not sure yet…

I need to be a more avid reader.  So, I am compiling a list. Its getting there. I need some help though.

And don’t say “The Bible.” The Bible goes without saying; it is a non-negotiable. Putting the Bible on a reading list is like putting breathing on a to-do list. It is a given.

What books would you recommend that I read?

Sunday Mind Dump

  • Cool buzz at church today!
  • Nic preached for the first time at The Connection Church today. He was absolutely HILARIOUS.
  • Everything Nic said about being scared of the dark is 100% true. I know firsthand. :)
  • Weird not having a female singer today. Nonetheless, Micah and the band still sounded great today!
  • Thinking about not having church next year on the last Sunday of the year to give everyone a day off.
  • Got a lot of work to cram in to two days this week.
  • Amber and Couper are still in Lubbock. I’m all alone and it stinks. No good food. Nobody to read a bedtime story to. Nobody to chill with.
  • Going to run a lot this week since they’re gone.
  • Took the Christmas lights down today. The house looks so plain.
  • Got some nasty throat drainage funk brewing. Sure you wanted to hear that.
  • Really messed with me that we only had one service today. I kept looking at the clock and freaking, then calming down.
  • Can’t wait for the new series that starts this coming Sunday! AMP’D!!!
  • I am so stinking pumped about 2009 that I couldn’t sleep last night…so I’m going to bed early. Or at least trying!
