SMACK. God always has perfect timing…
I preached this past week on how we can overcome our addictions. The steps we need to take to win are:
- Take it to God – This is searching out our hearts, getting real, and admitting to God that there is an issue
- Take it Public – This is sharing about your addiction with someone who will pray for you, pick you up when you fall, and hold you accountable. The Bible tells us to do this in James chapter 5
- Take it OUT – This means doing everything you can do to defeat the addiction and then also being able to have faith in God to do the things you can’t do. Example: you can go home and pour out the beer, and in three days when you think you are going to die God will bring you through the withdrawals.
I have an addiction. It’s something I am always working on. It is the addiction to the new.
Apple announced the new Macbook Air today. I want one. I started scheming. The base price is $1799. Then, a lady comes in the office sharing with us how we can help a woman in Rwanda have a home and schooling for her kids for about thesame price per year as the laptop that I priced out. The laptop I chased after in my thoughts…
And I want to spend money on this thing I don’t even need. Wow. What a selfish loser I am.
God, make me more generous. Take this addiction to the new away from me.
Needless to say, as a church, we are going to be doing something really cool along the lines of building a home for a woman who needs it badly in Rwanda. And I am PUMPED about this.
Materialism is a BIG character killer and addiction in our society today. I think we all struggle with it to some extent. What’s your addiction? How are you battling it?
