The Great Christmas Mis-understanding

Nic jokes with me that I hate Christmas all the time. Cole really, truly thinks I actually do hate Christmas. Even though I’ve never said that I hate Christmas.

I have said Christmas can be insanity.

I have talked about how we miss the point.

I have talked about our rampant consumerism.

But something I have NEVER said is that I hate Christmas. Because I don’t…in fact, I LOVE CHRISTMAS. I love it even more now that we have Couper.

To me Christmas is the story of Christ’s birth. Its transformational. Its refreshing. It moves me deeply in the innermost parts of my soul. If Jesus was never born, we never would have been given access to knowing God through a relationship with Jesus. God gave us His Son so we could know Him and worship Him.

His birth changed the world forever. Shepherds shut their mouths, King Herod freaked out, and the Angels broke out in songs when he was born. And He did it all as a baby laying in a feed trough in a cave full of smelly animals. God in the flesh came and lived to put our broken lives back together.

All I’m saying is this Christmas let’s worship Jesus Christ and celebrate His birth with our words AND with our actions. It ought to be more than just going to Church on Christmas Eve and singing happy birthday to Jesus. Between spending less, giving more and loving all, I believe that we can come back to the baby in the manger.

Oh, and maybe also by putting our friends and neighbors to shame with some awesome, plentiful, bright decorations…
