2009 Goals List – A WHOLE NUTHA LEVEL!

In 6th grade, I started writing out my life goals list. Each year, I make adjustments and go for it.

I am big on goal setting. I just refuse to drift through life. Most people spend more time planning their summer vacation than they do planning their life out. I think that’s a tragedy. Chris Brogan came up with a cool new idea for goal setting in 2009. I am going to borrow from his concept for my personal use, but I still have to set concrete, measurable, specific goals if I am ever going to accomplish them.

These are not resolutions.  Resolutions stink.  These are GOALS.  This list isn’t all of them, it’s not all of the details, and they are not in any order. That would just be too personal…so, here are my 2009 goals that I feel like sharing:

  • Take Amber out at least 26 times.  That’s every other week. And not just for dinner and a movie. I’m talking stinking awesome, knock her socks off dates. Shower her with affection and always put her before myself. Always.
  • Spend good, quality time with Couper every day. Some days it might be 10  minutes; others it could be 10 hours. I refuse to miss my son grow up.
  • Lead our church to an average weekly attendance of 1,000 people…this goal has a HUGE sub-list of smaller goals.
  • Lead our set design, tech, lighting, etc area to a WHOLE NUTHA LEVEL.
  • Read 40 books. See my 2009 reading list here.
  • Pray. A. Lot. I have to figure out what God wants me to do long, long, long-term ASAP and start working towards it, intentionally. Its eating me up inside.
  • Send more personal, handwritten notes to people
  • Go on a mission trip out of the country. No idea how this will ever happen financially.
  • Continue to run a lot and knock out a few races. Also, in the area of fitness, I would like to start biking more and bulk up a little. That’s right, everyone else wants to lose 10 pounds…I want to gain 15. :)
  • Cut back on some of our “dumb expenses” like cable tv. We blow money on all kinds of stuff we don’t need in this country, just because we can. I’m not going to do that anymore. We will be “trimming” this year so that we can save for the future. Live like no one else now so that you can live like no one else later.
  • Beat Steve Etheridge in a game of washer pitching. :) Now THAT is a goal.
  • DJ on the radio for a day. For some reason that is on my life goal list. I’ve just always wanted to do it. Maybe if I beat Steve at a game of washers he’ll let me do it. Heck, if he wins, he can have my job for a Sunday. :)
  • Re-invent The Connection Church on the web. I’m so sick of our website I could puke. That makes sense though. I have to look at it and work on it every day. Its a great site…very functional and simple. But, we’ve had it almost 4 years and its time for it to go.
  • Help Cole find a hobby that helps him relax. “Going to church” isn’t a hobby.
  • Build a porch swing. I’ve wanted to do that for years.
  • Not punch anyone at my 10 year high school reunion.

Sunday Mind Dump

  • AWESOME kick off to our new series “AMP’D” today.
  • I met a TON of new people today.
  • Had some serious signage issues this morning. ARRGGG. We should have purchased flat screen TV’s and vertical metal truss from day one for signage. Then, we could make all the changes we want for free. Printing new signs is expensive and I always get sick of them to fast.
  • I’m reading the New Testament and Psalms and Proverbs in 2009. Going good so far. You should read it with  me. HERE is a .pdf of the plan I am following.
  • My singing on video today was absolutely pathetic. Told you I was terrible.
  • Cole’s sermon this morning got me all pumped up about 2009!
  • If you haven’t attended Connection 101 yet, you need to go next Sunday. Click here for more information and mark your calendar now! It will happen from 3-5pm, childcare provided. Be at The Connection Church Offices and be ready to have a blast and join this incredible Church!
  • Tomorrow night we are having a free preview for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. If one of your 2009 goals is to get your finances together, you need a plan. THIS IS THE PLAN TO CHOOSE. It changed my family’s life in more ways than I could have ever imagined. We’ll be meeting at 6:45pm at the Kyle Library. Show up, see what FPU is all about, and at the close of our short preview you’ll have a chance to sign up for the class.
  • I have one of those INSANELY BUSY weeks ahead of me. YIKES!
  • We have some sick stuff planned for 2009 that I can’t get my mind off of. I am seriously losing sleep because of the excitement about some of it.
  • Couper hid our remote control. Dances with Wolves has been on 28 times because I can’t find the dang remote to change it. Every time I ask him what he did with it he puts his hands up and says “Huh?”
  • My brother and sister gave me and Amber Brad Paisley tickets. Can’t wait! YEAH! That guy can play the guitar like a mad man.
  • Looking forward to getting back to regular schedule in the office with the team tomorrow.
  • Can’t believe Jack Bauer is almost back. YES!
  • Connection Church, I love you. You never cease to amaze me. Let’s keep kicking the devil in the butt and rock this community’s face off for Jesus Christ! 2009 is going to be the best year ever!

This is the NEW YEAR

I’ve been staying up late, setting goals, praying, reading, and listening to”The New Year” by Death Cab for Cutie

Check out the lyrics and video below:

So this is the new year.
And i don’t feel any different.
The clanking of crystal
Explosions off in the distance

So this is the new year
And I have no resolutions
For self assigned penance
For problems with easy solutions

So everybody put your best suit or dress on
Let’s make believe that we are wealthy for just this once
Lighting firecrackers off on the front lawn
As thirty dialogs bleed into one

I wish the world was flat like the old days
Then i could travel just by folding a map
No more airplanes, or speed trains, or freeways
There’d be no distance that could hold us back.

  • PUMPED about our new series, AMP’D that kicks off tomorrow. Probably won’t sleep much tonight! Never do before a new series…

  • NOT PUMPED about having to try to fix some signage in the morning. This won’t go well.
  • NOT PUMPED about putting all the Christmas stuff away tomorrow.
  • PUMPED that Jack Bauer will be on in one week! YES!
  • PUMPED about shutting our cable off next week. FINALLY.
  • UNDECIDED about the fact that its the middle of the winter and 80 degrees outside…
