Over the course of our Pre-Launch stage at Revolution Church, we had to make the same decisions everyone has to make when planting a church. A big decision to be made is always how to market and how much to spend on marketing.
Bil Cornelius told me recently that if he had it all to do over again he’d spend 80% of his money before launch on marketing. WOW!
Leading up to launch we did lots of doorhangers, handout invitations, postcards and personal letters to people in our database. For launch Sunday we went as all out as we could with two weeks of newspaper ads and a direct mail piece to the closest two zip codes.
Check out what it did to our web traffic. Crazy cool. Our unique hits on the website tripled.
Was it expensive? YES. Was it a headache? YES. Was it worth it? YES YES YES.
I’d pay to get the church logo and info in front of triple the people anyday.
Interesting stuff…just thought I’d share.

Great stuff Zak. We’re planting just outside of Nashville, TN. and very jazzed about reaching the 70% of people in our community who attend no church. We don’t have a parent church or large org funding us, so our marketing budget falls somewhere in the 3 figures
. Postcards are not an option (too expensive), and yard signs are not allowed by the city. I’d LOVE to hear how other ‘under’funded churches get the word out.
