Today we are kicking off a 7 day “REV FAST.”
248 people signed up to participate and many have asked how they can best include their kids. Here are some tools and some important information to help you and your kids succeed:
For Kids 12 and younger
First, VERY IMPORTANT, for kids ages 12 and under, we do NOT recommend that you stop feeding them. Insert winky smile face here.
Instead, encourage your kids to give up video games, candy, desserts, tv or something else that you can use to help them understand this spiritual discipline.
That can be tough for the youngest children, especially depending on how much they do those things. Most likely, they will ask frequently for whatever they are missing. It is in those moments of asking that you will have the golden opportunity to pray together. Here is what you could pray with them (for a 2-6 year old). Have them repeat after you:
Dear Jesus,
I want to watch TV.
I really like TV.
But mommy says You are better than TV.
And I want to know You better.
Please help me know You more.
Please help me know You are better than anything!
Amen.
For kids 13 years and older
If you have kids over 13 years old, you could challenge them to skip lunch this week and spend their break praying and reading the Bible instead. Make sure to give them some direction so they can succeed and pray for them during your own prayer time.
ALL KIDS:
No matter what you choose to do to help your kids grow spiritually with fasting, the most important thing to remember as a parent is that it is your job to continually steer their attention away from what they are missing and toward the Lord. This is a big effort, and a constant one, but it is a good battle to fight and worth it.
