The B90X Bible Plan #B90X

I am all about a good challenge that produces results. That’s why I love running marathons, setting annual goals, and even Church planting!

This week, Steven Furtick at Elevation Church challenged his staff to read the entire Bible in 90 days…they are calling it the B90X plan. Check it:

“B90X is a revolutionary system of intense, truth-absorbing, brain-busting Bible reading that will transform your understanding of Scripture from intro to nitro in just 90 days! Your personal trainer, Ruach “The Breath” Yahweh, will drag you through the most intense infusion of His vision that you have ever experienced and you won’t believe the results!”

Pretty challenging if you ask me. I’m in…are you?

To download a PDF of the reading plan that will help you stay on track click here.

If you twitter, for accountability, tweet that you completed the daily reading each day with hashtag #b90x

Bring it on…the entire Bible in 90 days. AWESOME!

Books for Sale or for Store?

I packed up most of my office yesterday and it reminded me of how much I hate storing and especially moving books. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to read. But to be realistic, typically after I read a book, I don’t open it again. It…just…sits. Not only do they take up space, they also make you have higher rent or a higher house payment because of the extra square footage needed to store them.23816128_d4acb70b2d

So, I’m thinking about selling ALL of my books that I have read on Amazon and buying a Kindle or at least using the library for a change.

What do you think? Should a pastor keep all of his books? Do people think you have some sort of credibility because there are a bunch of books on a shelf?

Or can a “ditch the clutter” freak like me get rid of all his books and be just fine?

Books take up an awful lot of space, especially for something that you really only use for a few months and then store for years. I haven’t missed owning hard copies of albums on cd, tape, or vinyl. Why would I miss my books?

How can I justify my desire for compact, organized living when we have so many little rectangular objects taking up shelf/closet/floor space in my home?

Share your thoughts.

I wish Amazon had a trade in program of some kind where you could send in all your books and get Kindle copies of them…

Mad Church Disease

Knocked out another book of my 2009 Reading List.

The book was “Mad Church Disease: Overcoming the Burnout Epidemic” by Anne Jackson.

Anne’s book gives a real confession and information to help the reader diagnose burnout. She starts by sharing her own story of a long road towards burnout and how she prayed as a sixteen year old telling God that she would desert the church forever if He did not use her to unify it.

The book uses comparisons to mad cow disease and shows us how “mad church disease” can knock anyone out of ministry–not just pastors. Burnout affects all church staff and even volunteers at times.

Anne shares five principles of recovery and then takes the reader through some paths to recovery that include spiritual health, physical health, emotional health and relational health. The book is also full of practical exercises to help readers work through burnout and “second opinions” from others in ministry such as Bill Hybels.

You can click here to read a free sample chapter of MCD. Anne Jackson currently serves on staff at Cross Point Church and lives with her husband who is a musician, in Nashville, TN. You can also follow her blog at www.flowerdust.net.
Here are a few hard hits from the book at knocked me down:

  • “Since I had allowed spending time with God to be replaced by spending time doing things for God, my spiritual tank had been sucked dry.”
  • There is no if or when. Satan is trying to destroy you no matter what.
  • The successes, failures, joys and pains are all wonderfully woven together to make you who you are at this point. Don’t regret the bad stuff.
  • Creating boundaries isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
  • “Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself.” -Leo Tolstoy
  • Self-reliance quietly whispers to our souls, “You don’t need rest. You don’t need to refresh. You can do everything on your own. God is helping you, right?” (Not true)

Killing Cockroaches

killingcockroaches

Book 3 of my 2009 Reading List was “Killing Cockroaches” By Tony Morgan.

(Click here for a quick summary)

Killing Cockroaches is an absolute must read for any Church leader. If you read Seth Godin’s “Tribes” and enjoyed it’s mini-chapter format, you’ll love this book. Its perfect for someone like me who thinks all books should be less than 120 pages and have the fluff cut out. Killing Cockroaches has NO fluff.

Tony’s style of writing is quick and to the point. Never before has there been such a good book for church systems and strategies.

The book is an easy read; you’ll want to keep a copy on your shelf as a sort of church systems reference guide. There is no doubt that I’ll be referring back to Killing Cockroaches for years to come.

Bottom line: Read this book if you want to be challenged to stop wasting time on different things and to think more creatively on others.

And, whatever you do, stop killing cockroaches. God has great plans for you!
