MORE ABOUT WORK HI HO HI HO

Yesterday I preached a sermon about work. If you did not get to hear it, you can listen to it HERE (it will be posted in the next couple of days).I really believe that God calls people to be accountants, he calls people to be doctors, business managers, designers, construction, teaching, service routes, secretaries…whatever it is you do.He calls us to our work. He wants us to be a light in a dark place. He wants us to be influencers in our workplace. He wants us to live lives that are holy. That is God’s strategy.Think about how brilliant that is. Even out of those of you who read this, think of how many different areas God has us working in. It is the best strategy ever.Check out Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

It doesn’t matter what our jobs are, our vocation is being a Christian no matter where we find ourselves. Our calling is to do our work in a way that pleases God. What did Jesus do for a job? We know that Joseph was a carpenter so it’s possible he took up his father’s trade. But we really have no idea what his job was. It didn’t seem important enough to the Gospel writers to tell us. If you do a word search on work in the New Testament, you come up with very few references to employment. “Work” is all about what we are doing for the realm of God.Work as Jesus did. We do not know what he did for a job, but what we do know is what is vocation was: being self-giving, having compassion, truth-telling, and healing. Our REAL full-time job is Christian service no matter where we are.

A Shout Out to 2 Heroes

My dad and brother ran in the Austin marathon this morning. I can’t believe how much determination they showed leading up to the event and how pumped they were afterwards. I did not get to go watch them in the marathon, which TORE me up inside, but I did get to eat with them at lunch. In many myths and folk tales, a hero is a man or woman (the latter often called a heroine), traditionally the protagonist of a story, legend or saga, who commonly possesses abilities or character far greater than that of a typical person, which enable him or her to perform some truly extraordinary, beneficial deed (a “heroic deed”) for which he or she is famous. But these heroes are not myths. This morning was not a folk tale. And these heroes did not have any special powers. The villain was the streets of Austin and all of the big hills they had to climb. And to me, Da-O (that’s what I call my dad, pronounced ‘DAT O’) and my brother, Ty, are heroes. They are famous. I admire them and look up to them. And most of all, I love them.GREAT JOB DA-O AND TY!

A New Manifesto

Just finished reading the new Mark Batterson book, “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day.” It is an incredible book, all about how we are called to “chase the lion” we have in our lives. Here is the basic premise of the book: “What if the life you really want, and the future God wants for you, is hiding right now in your biggest problem, your worst failure…your greatest fear?” I finished the book in a few days thinking that the greatest regret in my life will be the lions I don’t chase.

Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Grab life by the mane. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Consider the lilies. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshipping what’s right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze a new trail. Criticize by creating. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don’t try to be who you’re not. Be yourself. Laugh at yourself. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away.Chase the lion.

I LOVE to…

I love to take complex issues that everyone deals with in life and present them in user-friendly ways. Sharing the life-changing message of the Bible in creative, practical ways with humor, relevance, and enthusiasm is my passion. My life and role are all about people. More specifically helping them connect with each other, and ultimately with God.THAT is why I do what I do each day…
