2010 Goal List Update

Each year I put out a goal list. Then, at the end of the year I like to update everyone and share how I did. Here is the 2010 goal list update. Each original goal is in black followed by my update comments in red. You can see my original 2010 Goals post here.

1: Launch Revolution Church. UMMMM…Double Check. What God has done this year has absolutely BLOWN my mind! Don’t miss our service this Sunday called “VISION 2011″ where I will be talking about all God did in 2010 and where I think He is taking us in 2011!

2: Take Amber out every other week. Not sure that I totally knocked her socks off every single week, but we did sneak in a date almost every week instead of every other week by going on some lunch dates while Couper was in school. AWESOME.

3: Memorize the entire chapter of 1 Corinthians 13. EPIC FAIL.

4: Spend good, quality time with Couper every day. We invented MAN DAY as a result of this goal. One of my favorite times of the week. In 2011 we need to put MAN DAY on a scheduled day so that it happens every week!

5: Be more focused and work harder than I ever have in my life. I worked harder this year than I ever have…but I also learned that it meant I needed to rest harder than I ever have. I started the year off (like a moron) saying I would preach every single Sunday in 2010. I ended up taking off 4. Next year I think I’ll take off 8-10. :) Work HARD. Rest HARD.

6: Read 30 books. Didn’t have a ton of time to read while Launching Revolution. I read 18 books.

7: Continue to pray a LOT. I’ve never prayed my guts out so much as I did in 2010!

8: Read through the entire Bible on the YouVersion Chronological plan. Check. Never done that. Awesome to read the Bible in Chronological order.

9: Go on a mission trip out of the country in preparation to get Revolution hooked up with a place we can go back to regularly. In the works. Lookin like Haiti.

10: Run my first ULTRA MARATHON. The ultra marathon I have chosen is 31.068 miles (50K). Check. My dad and I knocked this one out with NO problems. BOOYAH.

11: Go on my first sailing experience. Did not happen. But, now I know a guy that owns 2 sailboats. Just got to convince him that he needs a deck hand. :)

12: Stay ahead on writing sermons. I’ve been told it can’t be done by many mentors. We shall see. I’m out to prove all of you guys wrongo. Check. Booyah again. I’ve been able to stay at least 2 weeks ahead.

Now my head is cleared…time to start thinking and setting some goals for 2011…details soon!

Kill the Petty

I think we need to get fed up with the petty.

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of  senseless barriers and constraints. I am fed up with non-stop interruptions. I’m sick of the need to get approval or permission. The illusion that you have to be “amazing” or “experienced” or “ready.” The fairytale that you need to know what you’re doing…

These things are petty and will not help you get closer to your dream.

Let me ask you this:

What petty things in your life are you crazy enough to kill?

Your Eggs. Your Basket.

The saying goes “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

I’m not so sure. I say go for it! Be daring and put all of those eggs in the biggest, strongest, most fortified basket you can find and then defend that basket with your life!

At the same time, make sure you are walking the line between daring and dumb.

Daring is going for it. Dumb is going for it for too long.

Daring is living with faith and adventure with a little danger thrown in. Dumb is a lot of danger that you mistake for faith and adventure.

Being daring promises some temporary pain and understands that you have to go through the hard stuff to get to the good stuff. Being dumb just promises permanent injury.

Jump in the Pool with Your Clothes On

You’ll never be ready.

I am serious. You will never:

  • be smart enough
  • be mature enough
  • be prepared enough
  • have enough time or money
  • have enough experience

The truth is that nobody is ready. If they were truly ready then they would have taken action earlier.

Here is the good news…whether you’re thinking about starting up a new business, writing a novel, creating a new software suite, having a baby, going full time with a dream, getting married…whatever that risky and crazy dream is that you have is…

It does not matter if you’re ready. Ready is a moving target and it doesn’t really exist.

What matters is that:

  • you’re authentic
  • you’re consistent
  • you’re committed
  • you’re willing to fail (so that you can succeed later)

And here is the best part of it all:

The sum of all of this stuff that really matters will heavily outweigh your need to feel ready.

If you want to do something great in life, at some point you’re just going to have to jump into the pool with your clothes on and have faith that you’ll figure out how to swim before you drown.

The truth is that none of us ever become ready and then take action…we become ready AS we take action.

So many people sit their entire lives waiting on a train that doesn’t even make stops in their town.

My advice: make a bold move. Go for it!
