The Deep Hole of Debt

It happens at least once a month, sometimes more. Someone comes to me seeking counsel because they are feeling the pressures of debt. They’ve dug a deep hole…so deep that they feel like they’ll never be able to dig out.

Debt has become a marketed product in and of itself. It’s not a free service or a convenience like people think it is…it’s a massive industry. Its extremely well marketed and many (I’d say most) people bite.

As soon as you get into serious consumer debt, you start working for them. They don’t work for you.
Myth: Debt is a tool and should be used to help create prosperity.
Truth: Debt isn’t used by wealthy people any close to as much as we believe it is.

Debt is dumb. Most normal people are broke because they are in debt up to their eyeballs and have no intentions of changing. If you’re in debt, then you’re a slave because you do not have the freedom to use your money the way you want to use it.

Or another thing I see regularly is people who pay off all of their debt…only so that they can rush back out and rack up some more debt. They get into this strangling, stressful cycle.

I think a general idea of what is taught today is that debt is like a fulcrum – it allows us to lift what we otherwise could not lift. We can buy a home, a car, start a business, or go on vacation and not have to wait.

According to Proverbs 22:7, “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave of the lender.” When Amber and I finally broke down and took Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University course, I was confront with a spiritual decision. I could listen to my broke friends who thought that debt is a tool or I could listen to God, who says plain and clear that debt is a great way to become a slave.

It takes a lot of will, courage, help, discipline and some serious commitment to ditch your debt. But it can be done. Imagine how much you could put toward retirement if you just didn’t have a stinking car payment? This is how the wealthy really build their wealth!

Ways to Win my Heart

Yesterday I posted about why I am ok with paying more sometimes.

Today, ways for companies to win my heart:

  • Make it simple. Whatever “it” is, IT must be simple.
  • Give me my own account rep. I know its not “real” but have them take notes on me. Train them to act like they know me.
  • DO NOT try to get me to sign up for your charge card.
  • If I have to return something keep it simple.
  • If you get my order wrong, fix it. Fast.
  • If I am loyal to you, be loyal to me. (great example is Starbucks gold card program)
  • Use technology. When I go to my dentist, I sit down at the computer to fill out paperwork and update info. I love that!
  • Make sure I can try your product before I buy it. Make sure when I have questions that your sales staff can answer me clearly. (the Apple Store does this very well)
  • I want to be able to buy it in person AND online, for the same price.
  • Get your staff to say “my pleasure” or “thank you” often. (Chick-Fil-A does this very well)
  • Smile while you sell. Whistle while you work. Don’t be a jerk.
  • Have a no contract required option that isn’t ridiculously over priced. I’ll pay more to have it my way, but I won’t let you rip me off. And if I can’t have it my way I’ll go somewhere else.

Sex: Question Two

This week at Revolution, we’ll be talking about the topic of sex. I’ve been asked two specific questions a few times related to this Sunday. Yesterday I tackled question number one. Today, number two…here we go!

2. Is it safe for my 7th grader (or older) to be in the service on Sunday? Since kids ministries on Sundays stop at 6th grade I’m worried about my child being in the service.

I would be worried about my child NOT being in the service. Why?

First, do you let your kid go to school? Because whether they go to a private, christian, public, foreign…WHATEVER school they go to, I guarantee you that they are not getting a healthy or God honoring education on sex from their friends.

Second, at the start of January Symantec published a list of the top 100 kids’ online search words for 2009. The data comes straight from a free search monitoring service called OnlineFamily.Norton.

Be sure to scroll down and read the lists broken down by age. I was SHOCKED that “porn” is the 4th most popular search word for kids under age 7. Yes, you read that right…kids UNDER age 7 are searching for porn.

Norton Safety Minder“ is number 46 on the list. When you search for this you find instructions on how to disable the monitoring service. So keep in mind that this list is only pulled from parents who actually use internet monitoring…it doesn’t even include the kids who have free reign or who have disabled the monitoring service.

If you were too lazy to go click the link look at this excerpt:

SHOCKING SEARCHES FROM THE TOP 100

by boys and girls (ages 18 & under)

#4 – Sex (#4 for boys & #5 for girls)
#5 – Porn (#5 for boys & #24 for girls)
#32 – Boobs (#17 for boys)
#82 – _____ (I won’t type this one on my blog)

So, that said, I guess I’ll refer you back to question one. The most healthy place for your kids to learn about sex is from you and the church!
