I am Weak, I am Strong

Just some thoughts…

If you spend your life trying to be good at many things, you’ll nevere be great at a few things.

Society encourages us to be well-rounded and in doing so, inadvertently sets us up for lives of mediocrity.

When you strive to be the best in all areas you become a much less effective leader.

We teach “you can be anyone you want to be” when we ought to be teaching “you CANNOT be anyone you want to be but you can be a whole lot more of who you already are.”

It sounds backwards to our conditioned minds, but we have much more potential to develop and grow when we invest in our strengths rather than worrying about correcting our deficiencies.

If you stink with numbers why try to be an accountant? Why do we consider the American Dream to be taking the path of most resistance?

Sunday Mind Dump

  • I loathe time change.
  • Today was UH-MAZE-ING at The Connection Church.
  • I learned about this church shooting literally seconds before walking out on stage to close the 2nd service. I just about lost it. Things like this break my heart…especially when the victim is a church.
  • Please pray for First Baptist Church of Maryville, Illinois where this shooting happened.
  • This is why we have armed security each week. Too many psychos out there. That said, I hope that our security team has the most boring job in the world every week.
  • Awesome to see people putting more names on God’s Most Wanted lists today. INCREDIBLE.
  • We had a young woman that had a seizure in the lobby today. Please pray for her. She is doing fine.
  • Note to self: always call ALL musicians on time change sundays the night before and remind them of time change. :) I’m just saying…
  • Had some close friends that I absolutely love tell me today that they “just appreciate that I am real with everyone.” That is a huge compliment. I am who I am…all the time.
  • Loui Canchola and his MUCH better half Michelle were in church with us today, checking it out. LOVE that guy!
  • I had the MOST incredible, complete God meeting today. I was shaking the whole time.
  • God is doing some HUGE stuff at The Connection Church…can’t wait to share with you!
  • Today, Perry Noble said, ““The two biggest problems in this country are consumer debt and obesity. It’s not because we don’t have enough. It’s because we don’t manage what we have well.”  WHOA. NAILED IT.
  • If anyone has a whiteboard they don’t need holla.
  • Time for bed. Seriously!

The Starbucks Experience

150619Book 1 of my 2009 Reading List was “The Starbucks Experience: 5 Principles of Turning Ordinary into Extraordinary” By Joseph A. Michelli.

This great read discusses the 5 key leadership principles that have transformed the ordinary experience of coffee into an extraordinary experience.

Some quick hits from the book:

  • “We are not in the coffee business serving people, but in the people business serving coffee.” This goes along with something Cole says that has always resonated with me. Cole says, “We don’t teach the Bible to people, but we teach people the Bible. Its all about people.”
  • Be knowledgeable, love what you do, and share your knowledge with others.
  • Listening is just one part of creating a connection. We also need to discover each person’s specific needs and and unique situation and then find ways to help meet those needs.
  • EVERYTHING MATTERS.
  • It is just as important to create a great experience for employees as it is for employees to create an experience for customers.
  • A company’s brand is nothing more than the sum total of the individual actions its people take.
  • EVERYONE MATTERS.
  • Retail is detail. Missed details produce dissatisfied customers who go elsewhere.
  • A small detail is often the difference between success and failure. (A 7 cent valve helped Starbucks become a publicly traded company!)
  • These details live in both that which is seen AND unseen by the customer.
  • You CANNOT hide poor quality.
  • Customers want a consistent and predictable product with the occasion prize or extra surprise thrown in. (Like when Cracker Jacks started inserting prizes in 1912. Today’s examples are cell phones with cameras, cars that talk to us telling us when to turn, etc.)
  • Your efforts to surprise are a contagious force.
  • When breakdowns occur, businesses can still delight customers by making things right.
  • Delight is the result of an unwavering commitment to creating a comfortable and trusted relationship
  • EMBRACE RESISTANCE.
  • Nothing in nature grows without facing limiting forces.
  • While it’s natural to avoid contact with detractors, much can be gained by welcoming them into the early stages of problem-focused discussions.
  • When the concerns of critics are allayed, those critics can often become your most ardent supporters.
  • It is essential to correct misinformation swiftly.
  • When errors are made it is important to take direct, unequivocal responsibility and follow up with corrective action.
  • LEAVE YOUR MARK.
  • Successful business leaders realize that a key part of their success is leaving a powerful and positive mark on their communities.
  • The value of a business’s brand is 100% linked to the trust people place in the company to do what it says it will do.

Overall I recommend it. There is TONS of stuff that Churches could apply particularly to their greeting and cafe ministries in this book. You could literally build your entire “frontline framework” from it by gleaning what it means to be welcoming, be genuine, be knowledgeable, be considerate, and be involved.

Debt Week 4: Student Loans STINK

I’ve had more friends feel crushed by student loans than anything. Before and during college, I worked hard to not have to take out any student loans. I just refused to do it. I had a lot of my school paid for with grants, some on a ministry scholarship, and most of the rest my parents took care of. I also worked a full time job AND a part time job when I was in school. BUSY!

Here’s my practical advice on student loans:

If you want to avoid student loans, go after grants and scholarships! This means your GPA needs to be better than average, so you’ll have to work hard at your grades too. Good grades are the best college investment you can make. Students in the top 10% of their classes have many more options.

You could also try attending an affordable local college to get your first few years of required classes done. Then transfer to the school of your dreams if you can pay cash. Going to a community college my first two semesters was one of the best financial decisions I ever made.

Summer plays into student loan debt a lot too. Instead of wasting your summers away, work your tail off! One summer when I was in college I literally worked 80 hours a week. I was a day manager and a night guard at a waterpark. I pretty much ate, slept, and lived there.

But how do you find these grants and scholarships? Google is a good thing. Or, even better, there are some awesome books out there to resource you:

  • The Scholarship Book by Daniel Cassidy
  • Free Money from Colleges and Universities by Laurie Blum
  • Winning Scholarships for College by Marianne Ragins

And last, when it comes to student loans, FOR THE LOVE…DO NOT LIVE ON THEM. It will ruin your life later on. I know it feels good to have money to spend now, but later you will be wishing you didn’t blow that money away on random junk.

Or maybe, college just isn’t for you…but that’s another post for another day. :)
