Pastor, Who RUINS You?

I’ve noticed something…there are two types of Pastors:

1. Those who know that all they really know is that they don’t know nothing. These guys are always wanting to learn. ALWAYS. From anyone. ANYONE.

2. Those who think they know it all. These guys call me whining about how their church doesn’t have enough money. They make fun of other churches and pastors rather than giving honor. They belittle people in their own church. It is sick. And if this is offending you, its probably because…well…you get the point.

Guess which pastors are rocking it out? Guess who’s churches are growing and reaching God’s lost children?

Its a pattern that is killing churches all over: Pastor Pride.

I’m just calling it like it is.

You’ve heard me talk about the various coaches I have here, here, here and here.

If you are a pastor, who RUINS you? This is SO important!

I am not talking about the conference you went to and came back from with a few ideas…that doesn’t count.

Who is challenging you in your thinking, your personal life, your strategy for growth and your relationship with Christ on a regular basis in a more intimate setting?

If the answer is nobody (or maybe even if you answer is “well there’s this one guy I call sometimes) then just pack your bags up and go home.

You NEED a coach.

I had two powerful reminders of this in the last week…one where I was the coachee and one where I was the coach:

Last week I went to Bay Area Fellowship and heard Obed Martinez coach pastors through his Passionate Pastors coaching network on volunteers and on connecting people.God used this guy to literally RUIN me. He took every thing I ever thought to be true about these areas of the church and flipped it all upside down for me. Stuff I NEVER would have been able to fathom.

Then, yesterday, I was the coach. I helped another pastor with his offerings a couple of months ago and I got the text below from him yesterday. You’ve heard me talk about Giving Rocket.com and The Change Group many times. I believe in what they do when it comes to coaching churches on finances. All I did with this pastor was share with him what my coach, Casey Graham shared with me:

God, help me remain focused on YOU and YOUR VISION for our church…and please, continue to assassinate my pride.

Great Coaches = Great Churches Pt. 3

First, check out my initial post on coaching if you haven’t read it yet.

GREAT coaching takes an investment. I have learned that spending money to get great coaching actually pays for itself many times over.

I am taking this week to share and let you have a glimpse into my different coaching relationships and how I benefit from each

Coach three:

VISION / LEADERSHIP / CHURCH GROWTH.

I think its vital to have someone who coaches you through being a visionary leader. For me, there are two guys.

The first is Bil Cornelius at Bay Area Fellowship. He offers coaching networks from time to time. If you’ve never met Bil or haven’t heard the story of Bay Area Fellowship, you need to. Bay Area is a move of God! It is incredible what God has done in Corpus Christi through their church! And now, God is extending Bil’s ministry all over the world through television, books, speaking engagements and more.

The second is Eric Dykstra. Eric is THE MAN. This guy is pumped full of vision. I love him because nobody knows him even though he is doing incredible things for the Kingdom and because he’s the only other tattooed pastor I know. :)

Eric provides a more realistic picture of next steps for me as a leader and for our church as a whole because he’s not so far out ahead of us that it seems unreachable. He’s extremely down to Earth and will always say the hard things that I need to hear.

You can’t just call up a guys like Bil or Eric and jump into a coaching relationship. It usually means going to a coaching network or being a part of another coaching system. Here’s the important thing: find someone a little ahead in the game than you are and then hook up with them!

Not Another Word Out of Bil Cornelius’ Mouth

My friend and mentor, Pastor Bil Cornelius at Bay Area Fellowship in Corpus Christi, Texas is tearing it up. Plain and simple.

This past Sunday he did one of the most creative things I’ve ever seen done in a church. He preached an entire message without speaking a single word.

Yes you read that right…the entire message was done in silence. Pastor Bil pulled out signs, used powerpoint screens, typed out thoughts live and finished up by writing on a plexi glass board. The message was entitled “The Power of Silence.”

I’m not sure if he did it or not, but as he shared the vision for this idea with a small group of pastors, he told us that at one point they would be having their worship leader walk out on stage with a guitar and instead of playing any music, the guy would simply put his hands up in the air in silence for 3 or 4 minutes.

That just sounded POWERFUL to me.

And it was. Because check out what happened. Even though Pastor Bil never spoke a word, 116 people accepted Christ on Sunday. WOW!

THAT is the Spirit moving!

DNA, Balance & Heart Check

Recently Christine Caine spent almost a week with the staff at Bay Area Fellowship. Bay Area has the most loyal, God honoring, hard working, risk taking, Pastor supporting staff of any church I have ever seen. My prayer is that we can develop the same kind of team at Revolution Church.

Check out what Bay Area’s pastor, Bil Cornelius, and some of the Bay Area staff had to say (original link here):

After speaking two nights at the Glo Women’s Conference and 5 weekend services, she made time to sit down and pour into our staff.  This was a powerful time for our staff, leadership and key volunteers.  A few of the key takeaways from this time and Christine’s 20+ years of ministry experiences were the following:

  • The staff of a Church must not only support the Pastor’s vision, but the vision must become theirs.  Only by grafting our Pastor’s vision into our DNA, will we ever be able to fully support him in carrying it out.
  • Balance isn’t the Goal.  A balanced life is a myth when it comes to those called to lead the Church. Meaning: Nothing can compete for the HIGH calling God has placed on our lives.  No outside agendas should pull us away from the direction our Church is heading.
  • Always check your heart.  We must frequently examine ourselves and purge ourselves of attitudes or actions that might prevent us from furthering the assignment God has given our Pastor.
