- My buddy John Atkinson had an awesome post here on how we take stuff for granted.
- Maybe Churches could learn something from GANGS. Yes, GANGS. I’m serious. And so are my Catalyst peeps.
- I agree with Ben’s idea on being a creative genius in this post. I’ve lived it.
- Steven posted on controversy. Have you ever had someone that your heart just resonates with in every way? Furtick and I are connected somehow.
- Bobby Gruenewald posted on some things the Church could learn from Google. Awesome stuff. I agree.
- Our lead pastor, Cole Phillips posted about how we are striking back at IKE.
- A vintage Cadillac Zak post that I am resurrecting because it would rock to have some fresh feedback.
- And last, I am a Google guy (they run my life) but I hate their online photo tool, picasa. I am falling more in love with yahoo’s solution, FLICKR.

PD Community Gathering Day 2
The Purpose Driven Community Gathering actually started today. It was basically 10 hours of straight incredible content. Here’s the days highlights:
- I got to meet and chat with Kerry Shook
- I got to meet and chat with Carlos Whitaker after hunting him down like the wild animal that he is.
- I saw Bobby Gruenewald again and chatted with him. I really admire this guy.
- I got to meet Rick McKinley.
- I met Mark Beeson.
- Wow, I sound like the conference stalker.
- Listened to Rick Warren (pastor of the “mother ship”) speak about being renewed. Can’t wait to hear him again tomorrow. God always uses Rick to jack me up! Read more here,
- Twitter kept breaking which kept me from sharing as many pics today…
- Talked with Ron Sylvia some today too. When I walked up he said “HEY! CADILLACZAK!” It made me smile.
- Carlos, Tony, and DJ Chuang shot a ton of interviews on Ustream today. Go anytime and watch some of these. Amazing stuff! I love the stories!
- Learned about Hashtags today thanks to DJ Chuang. Pretty cool it you are a twitter freak!
- We had dinner with John Blue. I love this guy! He used to play in the NHL and now he’s a church planter right here in the orange county area. We coached John when he was still living in Austin.
- Oh my gosh…the snoring just started again…SIIIIGGGGHHHH…Cole sounds like a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant. It is LOUD.
- Every 4 minutes last night a train came by (literally 12 feet from our window) and shook my bed. Between trains and snoring, I didn’t sleep much.
- Feel like I have been drinking from the fire hydrant all day long! I could literally blog thousands diget=
Breakfast WITH Champions
I got to eat with some people I really admire this morning. These people are champions of all things church. If you don’t read their blogs, you should:
- Terry Storch
- Lifechurch.tv DIGERATI
- Co-author of The Blogging Church which is a book you need to read if you blog
- Anne Jackson
- Author of Mad Church Disease, a book I am PUMPED about
- Recently took the coolest and most life-changing blogging trip ever where she teamed up with 14 other bloggers to change kids lives in Uganda. Why wasn’t I included in this?
- She also wrote this article (and many others). Incredibly insightful, brutally honest, transparent, and real. All things I appreciate in life.
- Bobby Gruenewald
- Oversees an amazing resource: LifeChurch.tv OPEN.
- Wears cool t-shirts and used to perform in a rap group…fo’ shizzle.
- Also oversees what, in my opinion, is the most innovative thing any church is doing…interactive church online.
Some quick hits from questions I asked them:
- We aren’t ready to hire people for specific tasks yet. We need to hire leaders who are utility players 100% sold out to the vision of connecting people with God. Everything rises and falls on leadership. EVERYTHING.
- Our website doesn’t need to do everything. It needs to be SIMPLE and give the really important details (times, directions, etc) in a clear, easy to understand way. Less clutter!
- Hire slow. Fire fast.
- Building a staff is not about policies and procedures (although we do need those); rather building a great staff is all about synergy and relationships.
Something really interesting and scary happened while we were there too. More about that later? Maybe? Not sure yet. Anne, Bobby, and Terry, I need your help on the “Harmony” thing…
