Newspapers, Direct Mail & Web Traffic

Over the course of our Pre-Launch stage at Revolution Church, we had to make the same decisions everyone has to make when planting a church. A big decision to be made is always how to market and how much to spend on marketing.

Bil Cornelius told me recently that if he had it all to do over again he’d spend 80% of his money before launch on marketing. WOW!

Leading up to launch we did lots of doorhangers, handout invitations, postcards and personal letters to people in our database. For launch Sunday we went as all out as we could with two weeks of newspaper ads and a direct mail piece to the closest two zip codes.

Check out what it did to our web traffic. Crazy cool. Our unique hits on the website tripled.

Was it expensive? YES. Was it a headache? YES. Was it worth it? YES YES YES.

I’d pay to get the church logo and info in front of triple the people anyday.

Interesting stuff…just thought I’d share.

God, make me FEISTY

A while back at the SPUR Leadership conference (put on by the Lake Hills Church team and a man I love, look up to and admire – Mac Richard) I got to hear General Tommy Franks speak. The way he carried himself blew me away.

General FranksFranks told us that he flunked out of school at UT in 1967. He then realized that he had two options: either wait to be drafted and go to Vietnam or enlist in the Army. Before he left for boot camp his father shared something with him; that he needed to be feisty. Then he shared this acronym:

  • F – focus. Focus on what is important and STAY focused.
  • E – energy. Bring every bit of energy that you possibly can to every situation.
  • I – integrity. Your most important possession. Never compromise it.
  • S – solve the problem. Don’t argue or make excuses. Solve the problem and get on with it.
  • T – take the blame. Take it when no one else will. Accept responsibility. Be accountable.
  • Y – Yes, I do windows. Never say, “That’s not my job.” Do whatever the boss asks you to do with enthusiasm.

I was recently reminded of this talk by Mac Richard which made me go and re-read my notes. For some reason, the second time it STUCK.

God, help me to remain feisty.

I’m Pleased. I’m Crushed.

When I ask Couper to do something he has two answers. He either says “uh-huh,” which means yes, or a simple “no!”

And here is what I noticed today. Nothing pleases me more than when Couper says “uh-huh.” When I ask him to do something and he answers yes that means he is making an intentional choice to obey. Whether he follows through perfectly or not isn’t as important as the simple, intentional “yes.”

But when he says “No!” I get hacked. Nothing DIS-pleases me more than his intentional “no!”

If he says yes but messes up at least I know his heart was right…that he was doing his best. But when he just blatantly says “no!” and dis-obeys me, it hurts. It crushes me because I have poured my life into him.

Today when Couper said yes as I asked him to carry something for me, I felt like God was saying, “Zak, that feeling you have right now is the same feeling I get when you choose to obey me, even if you do mess up along the way.”

The scary part is thinking how crushed God must be when I intentionally choose to dis-obey Him. And knowing how upset I get when Couper says no to me…well…its freaky to think what my disobedience does to God. Especially seeing as how He sent his only Son to die for me.
