Kill the Petty

I think we need to get fed up with the petty.

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of  senseless barriers and constraints. I am fed up with non-stop interruptions. I’m sick of the need to get approval or permission. The illusion that you have to be “amazing” or “experienced” or “ready.” The fairytale that you need to know what you’re doing…

These things are petty and will not help you get closer to your dream.

Let me ask you this:

What petty things in your life are you crazy enough to kill?

What I’ve Learned After Two Preview Services

  • My wife is INCREDIBLE. Even more than I thought. :)
  • Someone will always have to back out last minute of a key role. Sometimes its for the right reasons, sometimes for the wrong reasons. But have a plan because it will happen.
  • Church planting is hard. Its stressful. Expect the stress, learn how to deal with it, and go for it. Don’t sit there and whine about how stressful your job is. You have been warned.
  • The internet is one of the most powerful tools we have in ministry.
  • The internet is also the devil. :)
  • Get a cell phone plan with lots of minutes.
  • Send handwritten letters if possible, not emails.
  • If you do send typed out form letters, handwrite a P.S. at the bottom that makes it personal.
  • Keep good notes on everyone you meet and every conversation you have.
  • Send thank you cards to everyone for everything.
  • Network network network. Its amazing what God has done through random people just because I walked over and met them.
  • Office out of the community. Starbucks is ministry central in my world.
  • Proof every print piece you do. Then have 15 other people proof it. Then proof it again. Then have your 3rd grade teacher take a look at it. When she’s done proof it once more…seriously though get a good editor / proofreader for all print pieces.
  • Spend the extra $50 to get the nicer equipment every time that you can. You’ll save tons of money over a few years. It only takes a couple of the cheaper $35 pieces of equipment breaking to cost you more.
  • Get a coach that coaches HARD. And then, listen to him when the going gets tough.
  • Fundraising is a PRIMARY role of a church planter. And its very hard to do.

What Goes Through a Church Planters Head Five Days Before Your Second Service

The sequel…I have a lot on my mind right now. This weekend we are having our second service ever!

Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Please shoot me in the face. We just got our Dec. 6th mailer. Its the BEST looking mailer I’ve EVER seen…except for that it says Nov. 8th.
  • How many times can I choke back the puke in my mouth after seeing the mailer with the wrong date?
  • Did I fail as a Dad this week? Was I a loving, attentive husband?
  • How can I get everything done this week? What things on the list do I have to decide to kill?
  • How can I build our team more effectively so I am not always in scramble mode?
  • Did we connect with all of the people we could over the last month?
  • Have we really prayed our guts out?
  • I wonder if pepto will take away that sick feeling I’ve had in my stomach for a week…
  • Do we have enough chairs?
  • It would be sweet if we DID NOT have enough chairs…
  • Church planting is harder than I thought it would be. I knew it was hard…but sheesh!
  • Church planting is more fun that I thought it would be.

What Goes through Your Head 9 Hours Before Your First Ever Church Service

Its just after 1am. We have 9 hours until our first ever church service at Revolution Church. What goes through your head? Here’s what’s going through mine:

  • Why am I getting all these good ideas NOW?
  • I hope there are plenty of volunteers to help us rock it out.
  • If nobody shows up tomorrow I am going to buy a bullet and rent a gun.
  • If everybody we invited shows up tomorrow we will have to move into the Alamo Dome to hold them all.
  • I hope we can make the gym not smell like cheerleader sweat.
  • I hope we have enough parking.
  • I hope I am not wearing my team into the ground through this long long weekend. I pray that they get GOOD rest tonight.
  • Are we REALLY having church tomorrow? Holy cow…
  • Please Jesus make the rain stop in the morning.
  • Jesus please make my wife feel better!
  • I need a haircut.
  • What if my alarm doesn’t go off?
  • T-shirt (which will show some of my tattoos) or long sleeve (cover ‘em up.)

And finally…WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING WRITING THIS BLOG…GOODNIGHT!
