The Art of Joke Telling (3 of 3)

Check out Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

A few last thoughts on the Art of Joke Telling:

  • Jokes have to sound natural. Don’t warn your audience that the joke is coming. Instead, allow the material to leak in as if were part of the conversation. This gives you the element of surprise; that’s half of what jokes are all about anyway.
  • Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If you do tell a joke that bombs, point out how bad it was. Use some self-deprecation.
  • Pace your delivery. Control your breathing (this is a whole ‘nother art.) Timing is critical.
  • Modulate your voice when needed. Enunciate.
  • Keep eye contact and SMILE. If you are sharing with a big group, shift your focus all over the room making eye contact.

Also, a few warnings when practicing this great art:

  • Make sure the joke is appropriate. The funny one about the three naked guys in a boat might be hilarious with your friends but it could get you fired at work. :)
  • Make sure the joke relates tactfully to the situation. If it doesn’t, then save it for a better time.
  • DO NOT laugh at your own jokes. It makes you sound ridiculous.

Connexion Students DOT com

Launched the new www.connexionstudents.com today.  Nothing too fancy, just a nice iWeb template to get us going.  Now, our students can find the info they need week to week rather than bombarding the staff’s cell phones…

Send me your pics students and parents…and, tell your friends.  www.connexionstudents.com

Connexion Students. Sharp Reminders.

Our youth group is sort of in LIMBO mode right now.  Cole and I are tag teaming our student ministry for the time being.  We haven’t ever technically launched our student ministry.  It’s very low-key…and yet, it is still an incredible place for students to investigate the claims of Christ.

We began a three week series this week called “How to Annoy Your Family.”  It’s all about making some changes in our lives that will affect our families in positive ways…we are spending the month looking at principles from God’s word that can change the face of our families, if we’ll just apply them.

I kicked off the series by asking the students to raise their hand if they live in a broken family.  About 90% of them put their hand in the air.  WOW.  I was floored.  Sharp reminder #1…Satan loves to attack the family.

I read THIS post today.  Sharp reminder #2.  To often, we are losing the battle for our kids lives…and it’s nobody’s fault but our own.

Student ministry has always been and will always be close to my heart.  This week was a BIG reminder of how important student ministry is.  If you are interested in serving with our students, e-mail me at zak AT theconnectionchurch DOT org.
