Junky Car Club

changing lives with junk

Yesterday, it came in the mail. My Junky Car Club membership.

The Junky Car Club is all about learning to live with less so we can give more. The club encourages members to use their money to support social justice causes (like Sponsoring a Compassion Child) instead of making fat car payments.

My Jeep isn’t real junky; it is 11 years old and paid for though. You have to understand that I grew up in a family where you went and bought a newer, cooler, nicer car every other year or so. This is not a small change for me; it is a PARADIGM shift. I am loving it though. Not having to pay a car payment has allowed us to give more and live on less. It is a life-altering, grace filled experience. Sponsoring a Compassion Child will literally mess you up and make you realize how blessed you are

What do you think about how we handle our finances here in America?

How do you give to and help others?

Maybe this video will help you like it helped me. This is basic 8th grade math. :)

One in the Same?

I think it is a conspiracy.  Dave Ramsey and Brian McLaren are actually the same person…

Kids lottery

Check out the pic below. There was a kid in HEB screaming because his mom wouldn’t let him get something out of this machine. I thought to myself that he probably thought it was candy. No big deal.

But then the mom said “sorry baby no lottery tickets today…”

WHAT? Had this mom really let her 4 year old but lotto tickets before? My gosh!

Just another indicator that we have seriously screwed up our finances here in America.

I refuse to be that kind of parent. I want to raise Couper in such a way that he grows up able to handle his own finances and never accumulate ANY debt. No student loans. No car payments. No debt. Period. It IS do-able.

As far as the lotto goes, I am with dave ramsey who says “the lotto is a tax on the poor” and, as I like to add, the stupid.

I’m Biting Back

I’m going postal. I am biting back. This is a rant. Brace yo-self.

I am SICK of credit sharks sending me so much junk in the mail. Really, if anyone is killing the rainforests, it is credit card companies and the 5 billion (true stat) offers they send by mail each year (see my picture below). The pic below is the offers I have received in just 8 months. Can you believe that? Pure INSANITY.

It is a harsh reminder that we are a society deep in debt. I refuse to be a part of such insanity. That is why, after going through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, Amber and I refuse to use a credit card. Life is so much better now. Remember when your parents said that you needed to get that piece of plastic and start building credit? BOLOGNA! They bought into the lie and then inadvertently transferred the lie to you.

And now that I have a son of my own, I refuse to live or buy into the lie with even MORE PASSION! I want to alter my family tree starting today. I want Couper to grow up 100% debt free. You are probably thinking “that is impossible.” But you are wrong. Plain and simple. If you live like no one else now you can LIVE like NO ONE ELSE later. It’s true. Amber and I are seeing it in our own lives. Cash only is the way to go. No credit. Period. Not even to buy a car. NONE. “But Zak, what about 0% interest? What about same as cash?” NOPE. That’s still putting yourself in debt and the Bible says that the borrower is slave to the lender (Prov. 22:7). The truth is that “same as cash” is NOT the same as cash. It’s nowhere close.

And here is the real issue for me: I believe that we are put here to reach as many people for Christ as is possible, but so many of us are in such a financial mess that we can’t give towards the greatest, most important cause on Earth. The TRUTH is that you WILL DIE one day and the ONLY thing you get to take with you is people…the relationships you made here on Earth. So if you are thinking ETERNALLY, the best place to put your money is places that change people’s lives. And God’s vehicle for life change has always been and will always be the church.

Imagine what we could do if we didn’t have a house payment, no car payment, no furniture payment. That’s a BIG raise right there. And if we weren’t always feeling such financial pressure suddenly it would become EASY to give. Jesus was the greatest giver ever. And I just want to give back to something that will forever change the face of the Earth, but more importantly, something that will ADD FACES to HEAVEN.

By the way, just for fun, I put one of Dave’s credit shark letters in every one of these envelopes and I am dropping them in the mail today. Eat that Visa. You should do this too…it costs them money when you drop that postage paid envelope back in the mail. Put some lead shot in it so they have to pay more for the weight. Seriously. Click this link, print the letter, stuff it in the envelope, tell them to kiss off.
