Goals ROCK, Resolutions REEK

I will be posting my personal goals for 2008 later this week. First, some thoughts on new year’s resolutions and goal setting…

Each year I spend a week or so setting some personal goals for the year. Here are the steps I take to set and acheive my goals:

STEP ONE – RESOLUTIONS REEK: I never make resolutions. For the most part, the resolutions that I see people make are more like wishes. Wishing won’t get you anywhere.

STEP TWO – BE SPECIFIC: Goals are different. They are concrete, attainable, and specific. For example, every new year tons of people say, “My new years resolution is to lose weight.” AWESOME! But, if we could focus a little more and say exactly how much weight we want to lose, a date we want to lose it by, and what the benefits to losing it will be, we are more likely to be successful to reach our goals.

STEP THREE – PLAN: Another important step we miss when making New Year’s resolutions is a plan. If you want to meet a goal, you have to have a plan. Write out a few action steps for each goal and as you are in the process of achieving your goals, make the necessary changes in your strategy. If part of your plan isn’t working, change the plan.

STEP FOUR – DIVIDE AND CONQUER: To often we divide our energies between too many directions. We make a long list of habits to break and changes to make…and we defeat ourselves before we ever start the new year. Narrow your list of goals down to the few that are most important to you and concentrate your energies on those. When you’ve achieved success with those, then you can begin work on other areas. When I set personal goals, I also prioritize the goal list…this helps me divide and conquer!

STEP FIVE – REST STOPS: Reward yourself along the way. Some goals are incredibly hard to reach. That means, it is important to take those rest stops along the way. Rewards inspire us to success and keep us laser focused.

If we all set some New Year’s Goals each year rather than being wishful and making those ridiculous resolutions that reek, I am convinced that we would be more successful at actually reaching them.

Blog Success, Family Success

I want my blog to be successful. I mean HUGE. Who doesn’t? So naturally, I should want BIG STATS. But I don’t always want that…

For example, I was extremely PUMPED to see that barely anybody came to the blog on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or New Years Day. The stats those days were TERRIBLE.

AND I AM PUMPED ABOUT THAT!

Here’s why: Most of my readers, I assume, attend our church, and I want people to be spending every second they can with their families on days like those. Part of my vision for TCC is that we see healthy families built over the next several decades. I want the divorce rate at our church to be ZERO. I want kid/parent quarrels to be ZILCH. I want LOVE to ABOUND…

I’m not sure if my bad stats on those holidays translate to the fact that people are hanging out with their families or not, but I can only imagine…

Keep up the good work TCC! Focus on your families!

Best T.V. Shows of 2007

Here’s my 10 Best Television shows of 2007.  Scary that five of them air on NBC…
10. Heroes – Science fiction on NBC.  Mehhh….

9.  Clash of the Choirs - This was a one week reality show where a bunch of choirs led by different music stars battled it out for the prize of a big donation to the charity of their choice.  NBC. It ROCKED.

8.  Kerry Shook and Ed Young Jr. – Ok, so these are two separate shows, but they are basically the same thing.  Kerry Shook is the lead pastor at Fellowship of the Woodlands.  Ed Young Jr. is lead pastor at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas.  Both of these guys broadcast their sermon series on TV.  Both of these guys challenge me each week to be a better leader.  See, not all TV is a total waste…

7.  Las Vegas – But some TV IS a TOTAL WASTE.  :)   On NBC.

6.  Miami Ink – Watching guys and gals get tattoos that rock.  Fun.  On TLC.

5.  PBR Events – Bullriding.  I can’t get enough of it.

4.  MLB Games - Baseball is still America’s sport in my mind.  Everyone else loves football.  Dang it.

3.  Phenomenon – This was a really short reality contest to find the best mentalist magician.  I loved it.  A guy named Mike Super that I really like ended up winning.  NBC.

2.  Scrubs – THE BEST comedy sitcom ever in my opinion.  If you want to see what goes on in Zak White’s head while you are talking, watch Scrubs.  :)   On NBC.

1.  24 – What did you think would be my number one show?  On FOX.
