I’ve been looking for something our family could take up as a cheap (Ok, FREE) hobby. So last week we started a new family hobby called Geocaching.
Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.
Its crazy once you get started because you quickly realize that these caches are hidden all around us. If you live in Kyle, there are about 10 within 4 miles of you! You’ve probably walked right by one.
The best part of it all is that they just released a geocaching app for the iPhone that streamlines the process and allows you to access your geocache info on the go. Check it out here. So far my iPhone has landed us within 10 feet of our geocaches that we’ve found. Pretty accurate!
The geocachers out there even have their own language. Kristi West, our Executive Administrator, introduced me to the hobby and I still can’t understand what the heck shes talking about when she asks me about our caching experiences.
Its a blast to hunt these things and the people who started it all have an incredible website that manages this worldwide treasure hunt. We have already found 4 caches…which leaves us with about a million to still find!
