The Christmas Album that You NEED to Buy this Year is…

It is rare that I listen to a new cd for the first time and immediately love every single song. But that was the case with Josh Rosenthal’s new album that releases tomorrow called “Narratives: A Christmas Album.” Its even MORE RARE that I actually enjoy every song on a Christmas album.

Narratives: A Christmas Album

From the second I took the plastic off and felt the matte finished cardboard cover until I finished the last song, Josh’s music is as refreshing as it gets. It’s evident he puts his heart and soul into writing his music and we’re treated to a beautifully honest album.

Narratives opens with Josh’s own version of a classic, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” one of my favorite Christmas tunes. Second “This Changes Everything” has the feel of a Christmas classic and is a reminder of what Christmas is really about, the birth of Christ! Definitely my favorite track on the album.

Third is a Steve Weisberg song “Christmas for Cowboys.” Good harmonica on this one. Too bad its about Cowboys. :)

Second to last is another tune by Rosenthal and Wilson titled “Before I Go.” It doesn’t sound like much of a Christmas Song, but if you have been a fan of Rosenthal’s you’ll love it anyway. And last is Lyle Lovett’s “Christmas Morning.” I’ll be popping that one in on Christmas morning as my family celebrates.

The ONLY thing I’m not so sure about with this album is why Josh looks like a 40 year old man in his picture on the back. He’s younger than me and yet that picture makes me want to call him up and ask him how the grandkids are…

Check out Josh on Myspace.

Blast to my Past

Had a BLAST with some stuff from my PAST today. In my high school years, I played in punk rock bands. That was all I ever did really. I remember being in 5 bands at one point. So, I’m sharing some personal stuff that I don’t talk about much today…Check this out:

  • Band one: “Sweet Children”
    • It was terrible. We were a Green Day tribute band. That lasted one show. I sang.
  • Band two: “Fabulous Baker Boys”
    • Also terrible, mostly. We had original songs. It was fun. But, I became a Christian and decided to quit the band when our lead singer started thinking it was fun to sing naked and sing “FBB ain’t nothing to F with” repeatedly. Inspiring.
  • Band three: “Mikey Likes It”
    • Not so terrible. Super feel good punk. This band was a BLAST. I’ll never forget those days. We got all the honeys. We played original songs mostly written by Josh Rosenthal, who’s making AMAZING music these days. I laughed more during those years than any other time in my life.
  • Band four: “Crashtestpete”
    • Not too shabby. This band was the closest to any form of success. We played tons of shows, recorded a full length album, went on a month long tour across the eastern U.S. and then shut it down. Recently, we had a couple of songs featured on a movie soundtrack.  TONS of memories. Great life changing experience. I always wonder what could have happened if we’d have stuck with it…and changed our ridiculous name. I made a true lifelong friend, the kind you only make a few times in life, in this band. His name? Jordan Polk.

There were other bands, but those are the ones I remember the most. A couple of days ago, Josh Rosenthal found these old Mikey Likes It flyers on the internet…instant personal NOSTALGIA! Check them out below. Straight up PUNK ROCK flyers.

But, if I were to REALLY be honest and share something personal from deep deep inside my soul, it would be this…I have always wanted to play acoustic and sing in a country band…
