Clutter. Simplicity.

Clutter is around every corner in our lives.  We just have this propensity to allow things to stack up.  Look at some of the major search engines we use today…they are perfect examples:

Yahoo…CLUTTER

YAHOO equals CLUTTER

MSN…CLUTTER

MSN equals CLUTTER

Google…CLU….WAIT, SIMPLICITY!

Google…NO CLUTTER

Our lives look like these search engines.  Sometimes clutter feels like a battle that will never end. At times it makes me want to scream “MOTHER CLUTTER!!!!”

I always admired my close friend Josh Rosenthal because he only owned things he really needed.  He only filled his schedule with stuff that mattered. His life looks like Google.  I admire that.

Then, I have other friends whose lives look more like Yahoo or MSN.   I have met people whose homes you can’t even walk through because they just have so much clutter.

I’m not just talking about too much stuff sitting in our homes…our schedules, offices, and relationships also get cluttered.

Clutter can be an indication of bigger problems in life.

What do you do in your life to clear the clutter?  What are some of your best practices?

I have a few clutter rules that I try to apply to my life:

  • if I haven’t used it in a year, it goes in the trash or is given away
  • utilize to do lists, technology and other resources that help you keep your schedule organized
  • work hard when I’m at work. that way the clutter doesn’t pile up at the office
  • spend at least 15 minutes every day clearing some clutter at home

More on clutter later this week…we’ll look at the clutter in our churches.

Splat Your Tat DREAMS

Late last week I asked my readers to splat their tats like my blogging buddy Carlos Whitaker did. Apparently, either my readers don’t have tattoos, don’t have digital cameras, or are just lazy because I only got about 5 images from people… :) So I am changing directions here…

Instead of splatting your tats to me, I want to hear this: Let’s dream for just a minute that you could get any tattoo you wanted for free. Pretend that none of the “rules” applied. Pretend that there wouldn’t be any professional repercussions, that no one would look at you funny, and that it was removable with a magical solution. Yeah right…but I said DREAM with me.

Given those circumstances what tattoo(s) would you get?

SHARE.

I would get the words “Love” and “Wins” tattooed on my knuckles. Because that’s just how I roll…

My Mistakes (#2)

Mistake #2.

Making the “Safe” Call.

We worry about ridiculous things.  Sometimes, we let little issues derail us from doing something great.

I’ll never forget the scene in C.S. Lewis’ “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” where Mr. Beaver is telling the children about Aslan, the great lion.  When Susan asks, “Is he quite safe?” Mr. Beaver responds, “Safe?  Who said anything about safe?  ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good.  He’s the King I tell you.”

We have to stop looking for security more than opportunity.

Jesus put it this way: “Abide in me.” He said, “I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves.” I take that to mean, “Zak, you’d better hold on for dear life because you are in for an exhilarating ride!”

I’m through making the safe calls.
