God, make me FEISTY

A while back at the SPUR Leadership conference (put on by the Lake Hills Church team and a man I love, look up to and admire – Mac Richard) I got to hear General Tommy Franks speak. The way he carried himself blew me away.

General FranksFranks told us that he flunked out of school at UT in 1967. He then realized that he had two options: either wait to be drafted and go to Vietnam or enlist in the Army. Before he left for boot camp his father shared something with him; that he needed to be feisty. Then he shared this acronym:

  • F – focus. Focus on what is important and STAY focused.
  • E – energy. Bring every bit of energy that you possibly can to every situation.
  • I – integrity. Your most important possession. Never compromise it.
  • S – solve the problem. Don’t argue or make excuses. Solve the problem and get on with it.
  • T – take the blame. Take it when no one else will. Accept responsibility. Be accountable.
  • Y – Yes, I do windows. Never say, “That’s not my job.” Do whatever the boss asks you to do with enthusiasm.

I was recently reminded of this talk by Mac Richard which made me go and re-read my notes. For some reason, the second time it STUCK.

God, help me to remain feisty.

The Lake Hills Sunday Mind Dump

  • Checked out Lake Hills Church this morning. A few things about LHC:
    • Most clutter free church I’ve ever been in. They keep it SIMPLE. I love that.
    • Some of the best church sound I’ve ever heard and best looking video I’ve ever seen. LHC hangs with the big dogs when it comes to media and tech. The lighting rocked too. Simple, elegant, and effective.
    • Mac Richard is a pastor that walks the halls. I watched Mac today. He wasn’t even preaching and he was still out in the halls bright and early with the people. Meeting them, saying hi, shaking hands. Awesome guy.
    • The kids area was very nice, clean, and best of all SECURE. I almost got tazed by a sheriffs deputy for walking down a hall the wrong way. If it keeps Couper safe, I’m all about it.
    • They were advertising their “Rock Camp.” How cool is that? A camp where you learn to be a ROCK STAR. I almost signed up.
    • Amazing parking team. Those guys know their stuff and have it down perfect.
    • A beautiful campus. Its crazy because its in the middle of 1.2 million people yet when you step out of your car, its quiet and peaceful. A great place to connect with God.
  • By the way, I stinking love the LHC website too.
  • Amber and Couper leave town for 3 weeks on Wednesday so I’ll be spending the next two days with them as much as I can. While they’re gone, I’ll pretty much work seven days a week so I’m going to enjoy and chill with them while I can.
  • I expect to fully fall apart by day four. I can’t cook, can’t clean my clothes and can’t iron on a good day. And when Amber is gone I forget to shave and don’t sleep. Therefore, if she is out of town, I’m usually hungry, a little gumpy, and a little smelly. Just a warning. :)
  • I have to find a rent house in the Schertz / Cibolo area this week. Needs to be cheap, around lots of young families, and have had no cats in it. Can anyone help?
  • I also have to move, with Amber gone. I think she already packed all the breakable stuff that I am certain to mess up.
  • I also have to sell our house (sign papers) while she is gone. Please pray for our buyers that everything would go well with financing and that they’d get this incredible home!
  • If you haven’t helped us pick a church name yet, please share your ideas at www.namethischurch.com – It will only take you 48 seconds. I timed it.
  • And finally, if you aren’t on our prayer team, we are still looking for about 90 people who will pray like crazy. I believe that this prayer team is THE MOST IMPORTANT part of this new church. Please join at www.theprayerteam.com

  • Trunk or Treat is coming FAST. Its this Friday and we are expecting thousands of people at the event! If you still want to help us show our community how much we love them, hit me up here. I have plenty of ways that you can help out for a couple hours on Friday evening!
  • Gotta finish planning our annual staff advance in the next week or two. Anyone got any cool, free ideas? :)
  • Yes, I wore a tie today and had a bandana hanging out of my back pocket. That’s just how I roll. I got a lot of goofy looks.
  • Yesterday, I went to the UT game with my buddy Dan Smith (see pic below). He is on the team at Lake Hills Church Downtown campus. I love what these guys are doing to introduce Austinites to Jesus! I hope to make it over one Sunday to check out their service. Pretty cool to be meeting in Austin Music Hall!
  • Speaking of Dan, pray for him. His foot is broken I think…it was swelled up BAD at the game. While I’m on a Dan rant, he also played football for UT a couple of seasons as a kicker. FLIPPIN’ SWEET!!!
  • Coolest website find in a while. You can go here to trade books, music, dvd’s, etc FOR FREE. Get rid of your old junk that just sitting on the shelf and trade it for something you’ll like!
  • Game four of the World Series is tonight! GO RAYS! Don’t care who wins, but if the Rays win, it ties up the series and make the series last longer! I’m all about more baseball!
  • No matter what I do, I CANNOT get enough of this blog’s posts. LOVE IT.
  • My family has a new family hobby I think…more on it this week.
  • I LOVE AMBER and COUPER!

Sunday Mind Dump

  • The band was absolutely INCREDIBLE today. I would put the music up in our top ten Sunday’s ever. ROCKING!
  • It was SOOOO NICE to be back at The Connection Church this morning!
  • It was even cooler to be preaching! I preached over Romans 8:5-16. INTENSE STUFF. I’ll be posting more about it this week, so check back in.
  • We had Baptism at our neighborhood pool today. The river is all dried up. It had a little different feel to it, but all that matters is that lives are changed. Way to go Connection Church! Each week, lives are changed for the better because of your willingness to serve God and His vision for our Church!
  • My homies at Newspring Church launched a new campus in a new town this morning. Those guys challenge me to no end!  Go Newspring!
  • Also, my brother from another mother Alex Alexander launched a new campus with his church this morning. Alex is someone I look up to. I was praying for his Church last night and this morning I get a message that he is praying for me. What a classy guy; I needed prayer today.
  • That said, Bram Floria came backstage, put his hand on my back, and prayed for me this morning. He was a God send because I needed it today.
  • Rafael Marquez came up to me at Baptism and said, “Zak, I’m getting Baptized today because of how God spoke to me through your talk this morning.”  Man it is an incredible privilege to have the opportunity to get up and share about Jesus!
  • I am ready to blog like crazy this week.
  • I have a TON to do this week.
  • We finished planning our August series…all I’ll say is that it is going to be the HOTTEST Connection Church message series EVER!
  • I sold my old iPhone on Ebay and bought the new one on Friday. I’m loving it (the new 3G network is FAST) but the battery life is TERRIBLE. I’m going to have to buy a car charger, something I’ve never had.
  • It was awesome to see Rene’s face when we gave him his new drum set this morning. I’ll have video of it up this week.
