“Need Guitar for Praise & Worship”

Last weekend, Couper and I saw a man at walmart with a sign that said “Need guitar for praise & worship.” It was unusual enough that I HAD to check it out. I stopped and gave him all the cash I had on me…$12.00.

He thanked me and then said “I really need a guitar.” I didn’t even ask him why. I just told him I’d be back in 15 minutes. He got real serious and asked if he could ride with us and go pray together…of course, I said NOPE. But I assured him that I would be back.

I took off to the house and got him my guitar. I thought I could do it in 15 minutes, but it ended up taking me about an hour for various reasons. Couper kept reminding me that we “have to get the scary man a guitar.”

When we got back to wal-mart, Couper and I walked up to him and he FLIPPED! He grabbed the guitar, grabbed my hand, knelt down and prayed an amazing prayer thanking God for being sufficient and for providing for us.

Then, he asked “Can I play you some songs?” He proceeded to play some Hillsong United, Third Day and something he wrote. He played very well too. His singing was awful…but he could rock the guitar.

He told me his name was Dale and insisted that we take his sign that said “REPENT LINE OF JUDAH” (I think he meant LION of Judah.)

Before leaving, I asked if he needed food or anything else. He responded “No way man. JUST the guitar!”

Then he took off. WOW.

I am only blogging this because I am still trying to process what God wanted to teach me through that. Any ideas? Check out the pics:

I Became a Church Planter

interviewwithzakwhite

I was interviewed by one of the best blogs on the internet last week as part of a double feature on church planting. My friend, Terrace Crawford is the mastermind behind the interview and one of my favorite peeps in ministry.

He has an amazing heart and is very well connected in the ministry world. Shoot over to Terrace’s blog and check it out. Be sure to comment and give him some love while you are there!

We have a Baby Registry…

We set up a baby registry today…uh oh…

But, its not what you think. Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

There are a bunch of things we need to buy to enable the new church plant in Schertz to do Sunday mornings, outreach events, small groups, children’s ministry, etc.

photo6Today, one of our launch team members, Seth Pennington, helped us scratch one BIG item off the list of stuff we need by beginning work on a HUGE custom GRILL. This grill will be used in block parties and outreach events galore.

I am amazed at some of the ways God is moving considering we don’t even have a church name yet. WOW!

Before someone has a baby we throw them a baby shower and “shower” them with gifts to help them jump start their new life with a child. In the same way, perhaps you could buy us a present before we give birth to this new church.

You can see a PDF of our list here. There are things on the list ranging from Bibles to hand out for $60 all the way up to a sound system for $15,000.

To give a gift, simply pick the item on the list that you’d like to give towards and then send a check made out to “TCC” for that amount to:

TCC
P.O. Box 2225
Kyle, TX 78640

On the memo line put, “New Church” and then indicate the exact item you want your money to go towards.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the needs of this new church plant!

Burnout Week: Divert

I recently finished Anne Jackson’s book “Mad Church Disease” and it has me thinking about burnout.

I have always used an idea that I heard Rick Warren say a long time ago:

Divert Daily

Withdraw Weekly

Abandon Annually

Pretty simple. But what does each of those look like? I’m going to take some time this week to break down those three things.

So first how do you Divert Daily?

I divert daily three ways:

First I pray. A lot. The Bible tells us several times that Jesus woke up early and prayed. If Jesus, the Son of God needed it how much worse do we need it?

Second, I play. I recently heard Rick Warren say that if you work with your mind all day, then you need to divert with your hands (physically.) Likewise, if you work with your hands all day, you need to divert with your mind (i.e. reading, board game, etc.) I typically use my mind all day so I like to divert by running, shooting my gun, working in the yard, or wrestling with Couper.

And last, I pass over.

Imagine a remote that controls your ministry day to day. It has a ministry mute button. I had to train myself to do this and I still fail miserably at it sometimes. But when I go home I hit the ministry mute button. Just like on a stereo when you push mute the music is actually still there. You are just choosing to ignore it for a while. Ministry can never be turned off. Its is ALWAYS there.

If you and your family are going to stay in ministry for the long haul you absolutely must learn to mute it for a little while every day.

My mute button is a small bridge that I cross coming home each day. As I pass over that bridge, I purposefully, intentionally let everything from the day of ministry go. I just take a deep breath and get it all out. That way, when I get home, I can be in family mode and focus. On days that I fail to do this, I come home and I am a bear that causes all kinds of conflict and carnage.

For me diverting daily is the single most important element to throwing water on the burnout fire and eliminating stress.

How do you divert daily?
