The iPad Pastor

I’ve learned a lot after using an iPad as a pastor for almost two years.

Recently, I have found myself working almost exclusively on the iPad. It works great! In the last week, I’ve been asked three times how I utilize the iPad as a Pastor. Here are some power user tips:

  • Get a stylus. You can’t write fast or accurate with your finger. There are not many good ones out there. Save yourself some heartache and time…get this one.
  • Get a good case. Many to choose from. I recommend this one.
  • Get a bluetooth keyboard. It will speed up your workflow significantly. The iPad on screen keyboard works ok when you have to, but for message prep, writing, etc you need a real keyboard. There are a ton of awesome ones out there, but I use this one.

Here are some apps that help me Pastor Revolution Church effectively. I have listed these in order of importance / usage for me:

Bible – Team Digerati from LifeChurch.tv built one of the best apps ever. These guys are legit. And so is their app. I use it to read the Bible every day. Or sometimes I let it read to me. I keep notes on it, follow reading plans and even tweet out scriptures from it.

Notability – This is the most helpful app I have. It is cheap and extremely effective. This app lets me integrate handwriting, PDF annotation, typing and even voice recording. I use it for all meetings, mindmapping, creative brainstorming, capturing ideas and presenting information. All of my notes area auto-synced to dropbox.

I also use notability for my final notes on Sundays that I preach from…I don’t actually preach from the app (I use iBooks for that) but I do all my final edits and notations on the fly in Notability.

Evernote – A close second best app. Seriously, if you aren’t on Evernote yet, something is wrong with you. To read about how to use Evernote click here.

Evernote is where I keep EVERYTHING. It is my virtual filing cabinet. Evernote allows me to have a paperless office. I even signed up for the premium, paid service. Evernote is great (especially the paid version) because it syncs to the cloud, meaning I can access anything on my iPad, Android phone or computer. Every piece of information, every file, every sermon mindmap…its all, always at the tip of my fingers. Power tip for Evernote: in the settings tell your iPad which notebooks you want to be able to access offline. Especially if you have a wifi only iPad like me.

Dolphin Browser – The stock safari browser that comes on the iPad is junk. Get this now! I just wish they’d make a desktop version.

Hootsuite – This app let’s me rock Twitter. I can schedule tweets to post in the future, follow certain lists of people or follow a particular hashtag.

1Password – Man, pastoring a church means you have to keep track of a TON of passwords. Enter 1Password. It keeps track of all account info, passwords, ftp logins, servers, and more. And it keeps them secure. I just have to remember one password and it takes me to them all! I also store all of our tax exempt info here, which is huge. Almost every business gives you some sort of account number to use for tax exempt and most of them put it on a little card. My wallet would look like something out of a seinfeld episode if I had to keep up with all of those. 1Password lets me save all of that in my iPad (and sync to the desktop and phone via Dropbox).

Logmein Ignition – Expensive but will save your life in a pinch. This app allows me to just leave the laptop / computer at the office. I can login to my computer via the iPad from anywhere in the world and use my desktop. I don’t use it a ton, but when I do, its worth it.

GV Mobile + – If you don’t know what Google Voice is, you need to start using it right away. This app just lets me effectively utilize google voice on my iPad. When I was in Haiti last week, this allowed me to text message my team on my iPad for free…all you need is wifi.

Dropbox – The best way to store collaborative files and share folders in the cloud. First, go here and get your free Dropbox Account. Then go get the app and you will be up and running!

PenUltimate – I use this for quick note taking. Mainly at meetings, conferences, coaching sessions or roundtables. Its perfect for when you just want to write fast.

Revolution Church – Sorry…shameless plug! Seriously though, having our own app has been a gamechanger. I’ll do a separate post on it soon.

Google – This app has tons of google apps servies built in to it but I really only use this for Google Docs access and viewing. Google Docs is where we keep any collaborative documents at Revolution Church. This isn’t really that great for editing docs, but it rocks for viewing them on the go. All team reports, church signups, attendance tracking, etc is on Google Docs.

Skitch – This is how I annotate and approve all design / marketing related work. It lets me easily point things out on documents that need to be changed or worked on. And, best of all, it integrates easily with Evernote.

Planning Center Online – This is how our REV Creative team and I program every service down to the minute. A must have app and a must have service for any church.

WordPress – This is how we run the entire Revolution Church website. I can view website stats and make just about any edit that I need to make. I also use it right here for zakwhite.com.

DocuSign Ink – I use this to sign and return documents via email. Usually PDF docs.

Feedler Pro – I use this to read all of my RSS feeds that are stored on google reader. I like it the best because I can click one button and send the entire content of any post straight to evernote.

Lemon – These guys are new on the scene and killing it when it comes to an easy way to keep / track receipts. If you lose receipts all the time, get this app. (for the record, I don’t lose receipts much, but I can see where this would help people who do)

Maniac Mind Dump

  • We kicked off a new series today called ALL IN.
  • The big idea of the day can be summed up in one question: If God answered every single prayer you prayed this week, how many people would have gotten saved?
  • Did you catch that? Pause. Let it sink in.
  • In poker, if your style of play is characterized by always checking and only playing hands in the highest range, they call you passive. But if you play risky, bet a lot and go for it, even when it doesn’t make sense, they call you a maniac! I want to be a maniac for Christ!
  • We have got to pray for boldness and then step out and be bold. Pray like the first church in Acts 4:29
  • Life is not about us. It’s about going out & being on mission as the church!
  • Jesus Christ went all in for us on the cross. Now we have got to go all in for Him!
  • What did Christ care most about? People far from God!
  • I challenged people to go All In today to close the service. It was awesome to see nearly the entire room stand together in a powerful moment!
  • The Revolution Band BLEW MY MIND today. I have never been a part of such a powerful, energetic, authentic worship service in my life. WOW! Pastor Micah, thanks for honoring God and leading faithfully! I am so glad we held out and hired a true leader…not just a dude that sings and plays guitar!
  • If you don’t have the Revolution Church App, go check it out. This thing blows my mind. between our app, the website and itunes, we have over 1,000 people watching the message each week online. KRAY KRAY.
  • On Easter Sunday we get to go ALL IN, in a very real, practical way. Check it out here.
  • That said, I head out for Haiti tomorrow with my main man of ushering power, Jeffrey Painter.
  • We are taking two HUGE duffels (100 pounds each) to Haiti full of stuff that the orphanages need. The coolest part is that YOU, Revolution Church, brought all the stuff. In fact you brought more than we can carry…WAY MORE. Don’t worry, we will get it all there someway…
  • I am FIRED UP that we get to sponsor our own orphanage in Haiti! Awesome!
  • I am also FIRED UP that we get to expand! Check out this page for details and even a rough plan drawing.
  • My favorite shots of the weekend below…
  • All photos from the day can be found here. Thanks to Angelle Sanford for the rockin’ photos! Check out her photography site here. You can follow her on twitter too!
  • Now, I gotta go PACK!

Stuff For Singles – Be Mr. & Mrs. Right

We have a lot of singles at Revolution Church and I love you guys and ladies to death. You are great people and I am honored to serve with you at Revolution Church. I really wish I had one more week for the Stuff for Singles series, but we have to prep for Easter. Don’t worry…we will continue to reach out to singles in the future!

But I thought that maybe I could get some last thoughts in via the blog. So here you go singles…

If I could only say ONE THING to singles what would it be? I thought about that long and hard. Ready for this?

This is HUGE:

Happiness is not found in finding the right person. Its found in BEING the right person.

So many people set their marriages up for failure because they are not the right person…not because they don’t find the right person. Think of it this way: If you are not complete in Christ you will just subtract from your marriage when you get married.

If you are single, right now, you are only responsible for your half of your future marriage.

Maybe the best thing is to stop searching so hard for the right person and instead start becoming the person that some other person is looking for and praying for! In other words, what if you focused on making someone else’s dreams come true?

God will reveal the right person. But while you wait, just be what you are looking for.

To Pastors: Why I Killed My Facebook

I finally did it. I killed my Facebook account. Now it seems silly that I waited so long to do it. I researched, listened to other pastors, asked tons of questions, made my decision and then pulled the trigger.

Please keep in mind that I am no Facebook expert. I am simply sharing my process behind the decision. For all I know I’ll go right back to Facebook months or years from now.

While I don’t see anything wrong with having a Facebook account (unless you can’t settle this stuff) I don’t think its the best thing for Pastors now that I put Facebook to death. I do see great value in churches having a Facebook page…after all the Revolution Church Facebook page is one of our greatest marketing outlets. We get more click throughs from the church page than just about anywhere.

Here is what I learned (remember, I am writing this to pastors. At the same time, there is some good wisdom in here no matter who you are):

  1. People LOSE THEIR MINDS on Facebook. I am not sure why. It will be interesting 20 years from now to read the studies and theories behind this social phenomena. For some reason you can say some things face to face and people are fine with it. BUT, if you put it on Facebook…KABOOM! I think that people just feel freedom to share anything because they just don’t perceive the same consequences for putting something on Facebook as they do for saying something face to face.
  2. It promotes a false sense of community (this one is something to think about for everyone, not just pastors). Again, it will be fun to read the studies. I am not sure why but for some reason people will rant and rave about how they can “finally share real stuff” and how they “feel safe” when sharing on Facebook. Really? Think about that for two seconds…So you are ok sharing publicly with the entire world but not with real life friends? I think this is a symptom of a bigger problem…the lack of authentic community. At Revolution, we value authentic, Biblical community. And I don’t see that on Facebook.
  3. Drama drama drama. My gosh. There is more drama on Facebook than I experienced in junior high.
  4. Farmville, Cityville, the aquarium, blah blah blah…I cannot believe that anyone actually has the time to play these games. It discourages me and makes me sick. And I recently learned that some people even spend money to play these games. Really? Don’t get me wrong…I am all about some mindless entertainment from time to time. But I recently had a church planter call me asking how to get his church to grow because they are on the verge of shutting down. My heart really went out to the guy…and then I started  getting a farmville request from him. Every. Single. Day. Ummmmmm…maybe you need to stop playing games and WORK bro…
  5. Some people will believe anything…and I mean anything that is on Facebook. Which would be great, except for that anyone can put anything on Facebook!
  6. Many people would come up to me on Sundays offended that I had not responded to their “e-mail.” When I would dig down into that a little, I would find that they had actually sent me a Facebook message. I’m not sure why people can’t distinguish between the two. They are different.
  7. As I talked to different pastors I heard several horror stories of people contacting pastors about serious stuff via Facebook inbox. Since the pastors did not ever check it, they missed out on important stuff. One guy had missed a death in a church member’s family simply because they did not log on to Facebook. Consequently, the family got very upset and left the church, causing lots of damage. Another pastor shared about a kid sending a suicide note to his pastor via Facebook…and hours later, he committed suicide. It wasn’t the pastors fault obviously, but still, that pastor deals with deep feelings of guilt and responsibility daily.
  8. I also heard several pastors who have gone through very difficult stuff say that Facebook makes you far too accesible to the press, bloggers, etc. One friend even dealt with haters downloading pictures of his family and photoshopping them to portray things happening that never happened. That is just flat freaky. I certainly don’t need anyone jacking with my wife and kids. You can think this is ridiculous if you want, but the fact is, we are in a fight pastors. My family has already dealt with people crossing lines on Facebook. Satan will use ANYTHING he can to discourage you, steal your joy and tear apart your vision.

Finally, here is the thing that really struck me. For the most part, I found that guys who pastor larger churches would tell me “kill facebook! You cannot spend time messing with that junk!” Guys that pastor smaller churches either said “you have to have one…that is where the people are” or they defended Facebook and told me I was an idiot if I shut it down.

I see value in both of those opinions. But I also see a happy medium. I want our church to reach people and grow and I am willing to remove ANY barrier to reaching people. So here is what we do at Revolution:

We have our church Facebook page, which again, is very effective. I have a superstar that runs it all on his own. When he sees me post something on Twitter that he thinks Facebook peeps should also see, he just copies it into Facebook and puts “-Pastor Zak” at the end.

So there you have it. That is why I killed my Facebook. I have to admit, it feels GOOD. And, I’m not wasting all that time managing it. Twitter is much easier. I spend about 8-10 minutes a day managing Twitter. I use software that schedules my Tweets and posts them later on and I actually only follow about 50 people. Its just more simple.

Of course, I could be writing the same blog post about Twitter in the future.

Just sharing my story. Hope it helps someone else!
