Yesterday we had one of our regular Creative Planning / Idea Graphing meetings for a message series that is coming up. It was Nic’s first bout with us. I time lapsed it (time lapse fascinates me) and captured some interesting stuff…see if you can catch it.
Cool to see a whole message series go from non-existent to planned out in about one minute…
Last week at Catalyst 2008 Nic and I somehow convinced our Lead Pastor, Cole Phillips to take one for the team. A company we use sometimes for videos called Sermon Spice had a booth set up with a little game you could play that involved habaneros, jalapenos, and some other kind of tainted peppers from Mexico.
Needless to say…it didn’t turn out well. Read more on that over at Cole’s blog. All I’ll say is that the noises coming from the other room as Cole chundered his guts out almost made me puke just listening…I felt awful for him.
Cool to see that he would do literally A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G for our church though.
I preached on 1 Kings 18 today. If you missed it, you’ll be able to listen here tomorrow.
The BBQ for our Connection Group hosts yesterday was awesome! We are rolling out some BIG changes with how we do groups and I am PUMPED about it!
I met a kid from Bay Area Fellowship church that is going to be living in San Marcos and attending Texas State today. He was there with his family checking it out. Cool to see how we’ve built a network of great churches and how we can recommend people when they move. I have some old youth group students living down in Corpus that are going to Bay Area! Nice meeting you Bryan!
The music was SLAMMING today. Micah melted my face off with his first song “Start a Fire.” WOW!!!
Cole Baptized eight people this afternoon at our pool.
We got new lifeguards at the pool. They ROCK. They are far from God but were totally into Baptism. Looks like I’ll be chilling at the pool more!
I want a new tattoo, bad. Los is working on a new one, why can’t I?
Man I am stinking PUMPED UP about church today!
I ran 12.5 miles yesterday for my marathon training. Felt terrible afterwards. Not a good sign, considering the race I am running in November is 26.2 miles. YIKES!
Cole was giving me heck about running today. When you see him, encourage him to get back on the exercise train…
Our new pastor, NIC, starts NEXT SUNDAY! WAAAAHHHHOOOOO!!! We will be sharing an office; can’t wait to be working with the guy.
I have a core conviction: Ministry takes WORK. The people who sit around and “wait on God to do it all” are going to be sitting and waiting for a long time!
I think this conviction stems from my disdain for lazy pastors. Our staff are the most dedicated and hard working people I have ever met. I love our team!
At TCC I thank God every Sunday for somehow making everything happen during the week to pull off a great service on Sunday. Our resources are so ridiculously limited that sometimes, its just a miracle. Here is a crazy thought for ya: A typical church of 500 people would have a staff of anywhere from 7-12 people. We have a staff of 4. Now you see why its a miracle.
If you missed church yesterday, you missed some huge news that I have been dying to share for weeks! Here it is: We are bringing on our third full time Pastor! His name is Nic Burleson.
I have known Nic for about 8 years now. We used to be on a team of awesome youth ministers that put on the coolest youth camp ever. I have always admired the guy. And now, God has done something incredible and brought him on staff at TCC.
Of course, the BEST part about bringing Nic on staff is that his lovely wife, Johanna, will be here too!
We believe 100% in the strategy we use when it comes to staff: “Hire slow. Fire fast.” Taking this step with Nic has been about 6 months in the making. Cole, myself, and the Ministry Leadership Team have been dreaming, praying, and processing what it would take and mean to bring on another pastor for almost a year now, so we are pumped up that this dream has become a reality.
Nic and Johanna will be officially starting on August 17th. And I CANNOT WAIT! Check out this short video introduction to Nic:
