This week at Revolution, we’ll be talking about the topic of sex. I’ve been asked two specific questions a few times related to this Sunday. Yesterday I tackled question number one. Today, number two…here we go!
2. Is it safe for my 7th grader (or older) to be in the service on Sunday? Since kids ministries on Sundays stop at 6th grade I’m worried about my child being in the service.
I would be worried about my child NOT being in the service. Why?
First, do you let your kid go to school? Because whether they go to a private, christian, public, foreign…WHATEVER school they go to, I guarantee you that they are not getting a healthy or God honoring education on sex from their friends.
Second, at the start of January Symantec published a list of the top 100 kids’ online search words for 2009. The data comes straight from a free search monitoring service called OnlineFamily.Norton.
Be sure to scroll down and read the lists broken down by age. I was SHOCKED that “porn” is the 4th most popular search word for kids under age 7. Yes, you read that right…kids UNDER age 7 are searching for porn.
“Norton Safety Minder“ is number 46 on the list. When you search for this you find instructions on how to disable the monitoring service. So keep in mind that this list is only pulled from parents who actually use internet monitoring…it doesn’t even include the kids who have free reign or who have disabled the monitoring service.
If you were too lazy to go click the link look at this excerpt:
SHOCKING SEARCHES FROM THE TOP 100
by boys and girls (ages 18 & under)
#4 – Sex (#4 for boys & #5 for girls)
#5 – Porn (#5 for boys & #24 for girls)
#32 – Boobs (#17 for boys)
#82 – _____ (I won’t type this one on my blog)
So, that said, I guess I’ll refer you back to question one. The most healthy place for your kids to learn about sex is from you and the church!
