The MOST Radical, Revolutionary Ever

Yesterday in our all team meeting, Cole shared some stuff with us that got me SUPER PUMPED UP about 2009. He opened up by reading John 1:1-18.

Then he shared that no matter how revolutionary we think we are, all of us have at least some propensity to want things to stay the same. It’s lurking deeper within some of us than others, but its there.

God is the most radical revolutionary there is. He’s not traditional at all. He’s always up to something new.

The birth of Jesus Christ was the most radical and revolutionary thing to ever happen. God shook up every religious system, thought, and mindset that there is and completely changed to way we relate to him through the birth of His son.

Cole also shared Revelation 21:5. God is up to something BIG and NEW at The Connection Church.

So, connectors, hold on to your butts. In 2009 we are going to shake stuff up and press forward. We’ve come a long way, but we’ll NEVER stop having a long way to go.

Get ready to be change agents. Get ready to see people all along the I-35 corridor meet Jesus like never before!

2009, HERE. WE. COME.

Why I Punish Myself: Life Goals

I told you earlier in the week that I was going to share this week why I would continually “punish myself” as so many of you have called it, by doing things like running 26.2 miles. Here is the why: Most people spend more time planning their summer vacation than they do planning their life out.

In 6th grade, I started writing out the life goals list that you see pictured to the left. Those are literally THE SAME sheets of paper I started on. I’ve always been an extremely driven person. When I set out to accomplish something I’ll do anything and everything in my power to get there.

Over the years I have removed goals from the list because they weren’t important to me anymore. I have added goals that have become important. And, of course, I have scratched goals off as I accomplish them.

I’ve removed some goals from the list simply because I realized my motivation was wrong. If the motivation behind the goal is wrong, then its better to not accomplish it.

Some of my goals are spiritual goals and some are just dumb things I want (or wanted) to do one day. Over the years, I’ve trimmed the list in places where stupidity reigned and added to the list as I’ve grown spiritually.

As I’ve matured in Christ, this list has become more of a “Zak’s God ordained dreams and desires” list. Its cool to look back and watch how my heart has turned from desiring to reach some completely selfish goals to wanting desperately to accomplish goals that can change the lives of others. Its almost like a spiritual journal on a couple of sheets of paper.

So that’s why I “punished myself” this weekend by running 26.2 miles. On Sunday night when I got the old list out it was all worth it. “Run a full marathon with Dad.” CHECK.

I’ve created my own little “ceremony” for scratching these goals off the list. First I pray, thanking God for allowing me to accomplish the goal. Then I pray asking God to help me use what I’ve learned to help others realize their God given potential. After praying, I take a pen out and scratch the goal off of the list…one of the most refreshing feelings on Earth! Last of all I review the list, identify a few next key goals, and pray that God would continue to work in my life and use me in BIG ways.

Maybe one day I’ll share my full list with you. More importantly I hope that by sharing this you will make your own list and think BIG!

Sunday Mind Dump

  • What a day! WOW!
  • Services were incredible today!
  • Kids computerized check in was partially up and running this morning. Stick with us a few weeks and we’ll have it going at 10%. Things might be a little crazy for a couple more weeks.
  • The Kyle police department decided to show up in our parking lot and write about 40 “courtesy tickets.” Absolutely dumb. I spoke with one of the officers and he said the chief would be calling. Bring it.
  • I saw TONS of new faces today. Incredible! KEEP INVITING OTHERS CONNECTORS!
  • Our new pre-school and nursery director, Jennifer Martinez was rocking it out today!
  • Actually, all of our kids volunteers seemed to be ROCKING IT OUT today!
  • I taught Connection 201 this afternoon. Had five people commit to the four spiritual habits we talk about in the class. ROCKIN!
  • Are you serving at The Connection Church? If not, why not serve in the office for a few hours during the week. Contact me here if you are interested.
  • Kinda bummed out. I was supposed to hit the wakeboard for a while today but got rained out. Bummer.
  • Marathon training is going great. I won’t lie though…it is the toughest thing I have ever done. I ran 14 miles Saturday morning (a personal distance record.) Its freaking me out because after 14 miles I was beat and the race is 26.2 miles. HOLY COW I am in trouble!
  • Got some BIG stuff I am processing right now. I’d appreciate your prayers.
  • My family is coming in to town this weekend. YES!
  • Running the Nike Human Race 10K (6.2 miles) in Austin on Sunday night. I know of at least 8 Connectors that are running it. You should run it too. Sign up here.
  • I feel like this fall is going to be the most life-changing season of ministry ever at The Connection Church! Brace yo’self!
