Stressful Jobs – An Observation

Just an observation and a bit of a rant…

Over the last couple of weeks I have heard many people complain about their jobs and then quote this article from CNN to validate what they are saying.

Here is my response: sorryboutcha.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think their job is at least a little bit stressful. I mean, wouldn’t it be great if we all just got exactly what we want and could get paid to play golf (Tiger Woods), eat cookies on TV (Cookie Monster), or heck, even sing (insert favorite prominent artist here.)

I am sure that Tiger, Cookie and Britney never experience any stress right?

Some stress is inevitable, but you can structure your life in ways that buffer you from stress and stressful events. Maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and having a few close friendships where you can be 100% honest and open are all important ways to relieve stress and stay healthy.

Some things that we turn to to relieve stress actually cause more in the long run. Some of us smoke, drink in excess, spend too much, or handle stress in other ways that we know are not good for us.

The point is this: LIFE IS STRESSFUL.

You have two options. WHINE. Or DO SOMETHING about it.

That is all.

Take a Breath

I am learning to step back and take a deep breath. Let me explain…

A couple of weeks ago, we had a long, stressful day. But it wrapped up great…or so I thought…

I took Amber and Couper for a good long bike ride and some time at the park playground. It was nice and cool outside (about 90 degrees is cool!) so we had to get outdoors. When we got back home I realized we had locked ourselves out. And I had no phone. And I had no money. And I had no…nothing.

Luckily, we have met a few neighbors and one was gracious enough to let me come inside, use my google contacts to look up Ben’s number, and borrow his phone to call Ben. Then, Ben was awesome enough to drive one hour and bring me the extra key he had, even though he had to be at work at 5:30am the next day.

Its only been a few weeks, but we are already laughing it off. In the moment we were stressed out and hacked off. Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I should have just been happy that we have a house to get locked out of. I should have turned it in to an opportunity to do something fun (camp out on the concrete night!!!).

All I had to do was step back for one second and take a deep breath to clear my head and not let some silly little circumstance ruin the day. I am finding its easier to have this kind of attitude and take those deep breaths when I spend more time with God.

What do you do when you have a deep breath moment?
